Un "étude" o estudio es una pieza instrumental musical, generalmente breve, para practicar y perfeccionar dificultades técnicas de interpretación de un determinado instrumento.
Para Brendel, un “estudio sinfónico” es una contradicción. A pesar de que Schumann admiraba los estudios poéticos de Chopin, Henselt y Moscheles, quería algo que fuera más allá de lo que él sentía como estrechez de este género.
