(1) Originally from Ethiopia, @timnitGebru came to the US when she was 16-years-old. High school teachers expected her to fail. A guidance counselor nearly gaslit her into believing no university would ever accept her. She proved them wrong repeatedly. forbes.com/sites/mariyaya…

The research community within Google and external to it needs to listen to marginalized voices when they speak and make space for them, even when it's something we don't want to hear. Particularly when it's something we don't want to hear. 2/6

After ~6yrs of consistent & positive engagement with the community, organizations, & press on behalf of Google, I suddenly went dark just as I had achieved a significant milestone in my career: heading the DC office for @pinterest, leading federal policy for the company. 2/
What should have been a moment of pride and the beginning of a long journey achieving federal and social impact wins for the company, Pinners, and the communities it serves instead marked a period of glaringly unfair pay, intense discrimination, and terrifying retaliation. 3/

As a Black woman, seeing @Pinterest’s middle of the night “Black employees matter” statement made me scratch my head after I just fought for over a full year to be paid and leveled fairly… 2/

Most black folks I know have posted about the docuseries in the last few days (thankfully black people in my networks are expressing support of the victims of sexual abuse & coercion though their posts suggest to me that is not the case with their entire friends network)
In contrast, nearly all white folks I know are not even acknowledging the docuseries, the #RKelly conversation, nothing. This divide/contrast reminds me that white people are not required to know what’s happening to and among black folks.
