In a response to Richard Murphy's blog posted over the weekend, I think this is very insightful as to why the Tories are being so #cruel over #welfare #benefits and #CostOfLivingCrisis Support (a 🧵)... /1
/2 There is a new comment on The #Tories are now the most #rightwing governing party in the developed world:
"It could be worse than that. Maybe the rather tepid move to Labour in the polls is because of something darker.

A 🧵on #benefits

#KwasiKwarteng’s reluctance to confirm that benefits will be uprated in line with #inflation has fed speculation that the government is considering a real-terms cut.

I’m going to explore this further, but at first sight it looks like a very bad idea...
To recap, benefits are usually uprated in April in line with the CPI measure of inflation recorded in the previous September. This meant that benefits rose by just 3.1% in April this year (the inflation rate in September 2021), well below actual inflation of 9.0% in April itself.
The row about this at the time was partly defused by additional one-off payments to low-income households.

But Ministers also argued that benefit claimants could expect to catch up next year when payments were uprated in line with the September CPI (probably about 10%).

Left Foot Forward:
Lurching the UK towards 'Reaganomics'

A ‘foot soldier’ for US economic fundamentalists, #Truss and her cabinet appear to be applying policy from an American right-wing playbook and lurching the country towards ‘#Reaganomics.’ /1
#RightWingWrong
/2 For the most part, since 1980, #Republican economic policy has revolved around a single policy - hefty tax cuts heavily tilted towards the rich with enormous budgetary deficits as a consequence. Under the Reagan Presidency (1980-1988), income tax was cut across the board
/3 and the top rate of income tax reduced from 70% to 28%. Both Reagan and Bush ran up enormous deficits via huge tax cuts. When Clinton came to power in 1993, he had an awful mess to clean up.

Apart from leading to higher income inequality and punishing the poor –

2nd post I’ve seen in 24hrs on this topic.
People who think Labour’s reference to “working PEOPLE” instead of “working class” is not deliberate- think again. Rachel Reeves said it herself, in 2015!
What about sick/disabled? What indeed? #Labour #Vulnerable #Benefits
This lady, who has spoken to @Keir_Starmer on the issue, recognises the issue. There are many people who CANNOT work due to illness or disability, yet we are disparaged along with those who CHOOSE not to work. It is grossly unfair & cruel.
I receive PIP &, as I have a small ill health pension, the severe disability premium part of ESA. I do not receive council tax benefits or help with NHS costs. Frankly, I would 💯 prefer to work; I miss not being able to work; I never chose to get sick!

What’s behind the Treasury idea that #GP’s should prescribe cash for those in #fuel poverty?
~ Richard Murphy
taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2022/08/2…
/2 According to the Guardian ‘GPs could write prescriptions for money off energy bills for the most vulnerable under a plan drawn up by the Treasury’. Let’s just think about that for a moment. A thread….
/3 To provide a caveat, the #Treasury has not said Team #Truss has adopted this plan as yet, but it’s been put out as an idea for a reason, and it must exist, so what’s wrong with this proposal? #ToriesWrong #CostOfLivingCrisis

The Medicare DIS-Advantage Plans...
Many seniors are being lured into Medicare Advantage Plans due to the added benefits of hearing, dental, and gym membership coverage. Image
These plans are actually run by private insurers and actually quite profitable for insurance companies with profit margins of 5% or greater (industry average is 4%) khn.org/.../medicare-a…
Further these plans have the added problems of:
1) Narrow Networks - in fact, many of the most prestigious cancer centers in the country are excluded from these plans. Oddly enough 60% of Cancer diagnoses are in Medicare aged individuals... cancer.gov/about.../cause…

People and Corporations show you who they are... We choose to believe them!

Ohhhh the irony, two of the bad actors (insurance companies and private equity) that are inflating medical costs and harming patients and healers are suing each other and exposing to us all just a
glimpse of the deception/exploitation/greed that these corps have been using to put profits >>> patients.

United is suing Team Health (owned by the private equity Blackstone group) for over coding and thus overcharging patients by $100 million.
Fremont Emergency Medicine (an affiliate of Team Health) is suing United for their gross underpayment of frontline clinicians.

It's likely that to some extent both are true...

Private Equity is harmful to patient care because they often boost their own profits by

No, no thanks, no gracias, not in a million years, never ever…

No Optum I do not want to be apart of your racketeering swamp of vertical integration.

Let’s talk about some Optum facts:
Optum is now the single largest owner of Physicians.
Optum is a subsidiary of United Health Group.

In Q2 of 2021 UHG made $4.3 billion in profits and $71.3 billion in revenue.

UHG stock share prices have grown 2200% (from $20.02 to $460.47) since Nov 2008.
Two of the main ways UHG makes such massive profits is to deny payments to physicians for services rendered (I hear from physicians everyday that this happens to) and because their PBM OptumRx uses spread pricing to inflate the cost of medications their members purchase

"The Healthcare System breed passivity and dependence..." ~ Steve Forbes
The main ways that the hospitals and insurance companies do this is to:
1) Hide their prices
2) Make it complex to understand
3) Build rapport to enlist trust in patients that they will be taken care of
However what we see everyday is that these folks use deception, complexity, narrow networks and many more tactics to make it difficult and complex for patients to get any benefit from their health insurance.
Where health insurance is difficult and complex, Medical Cost Sharing
is simple and easy.
You make a monthly contribution, you have an initial unsharable amount, and you can choose any doctor you want! #simple #easy

Changes to #UniversalCredit in #Budget2021 see the loss of £20 (#KeepTheLifeline) "mitigated" with a reduction in the UC "taper rate" from 63p to 55p.

Let's look at what that means, who that helps and who that hurts.

#poverty #ukpolitics #benefits #UKPoverty #foodbanks

1.
It means that now instead of 63p being deducted from Universal Credit for every £1 earned, only 55p will be. Meaning claimants in work are 8p better off per £1 wages earned.

That offsets that £20 for some. Who though? How many 8p's are needed to reach £20?

2.
It's actually £250 that is needed in wages every month, to offset the £20 cut. Or to put it another way, that's 59h work a month on the apprentice minimum wage, or 29h on the min wage over 23.

At age 23, if you work 7h a week you should be better off with the new rates?

3.

Anyone perusing the top articles of major media outlets last weekend would have read several pieces on the extraordinary #shortages being witnessed in the U.S. #economy today, and particularly those in the #labor market.
The tone of many articles was pessimistic, suggesting that the #supply-side #shortages and dislocations may be systemic, or long-term, but we think there’s evidence that the U.S. #economy will display considerably greater dynamism and resilience than the pessimists believe.
First, it’s vital to recognize that this is a #supply constraint problem, not one of #demand. Indeed, strong demand is being driven by a host of powerful influences: 1) household balance sheets never been cleaner and HH #wealth is $25 trillion greater now than pre-Covid level.
