Now that #UPSCPrelims2022 is done & dusted,it’s time to head back into the preparation mode with renewed vigour after a well-deserved break.Irrespective of the cut-offs, if you’re giving this or the next #UPSC attempt,it’s time to prepare for Mains. How to ace the mains?Thread 1:
1. Read the #UPSC notification. Didn’t expect that, did you? They clearly mention the demand of the exam. “The main exam is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.”
2. Approach to Study? “The questions are likely to test the candidate’s basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyse.” Focus on understanding an issue in all its facets, the context behind it, & know how to interlink & analyse it from multiple dimensions.

1/ In the late 1940s, when Sardar Patel was traveling across the country in his historical effort to unify post-Independence India, Usha Sundaram was often one of the pilots for his flights.
2/ At a time when Indian women in planes were still a rarity, Usha took to the skies at a young age soon after she married V Sundaram in July 1941, becoming the first graduate of the flying club at #Bengaluru's Jakkur.
3/ Sundaram was an accomplished pilot and an instructor at Madras Flying Club. He and Usha became the pilots of the Maharaja of Mysore's personal plane, a Dakota DC-3, that was utilized by dignitaries like Nehru, Patel & Dr Rajendra Prasad to fly to different corners of India.

#Thread about EV Bikes & why @ather is solid?

The biggest lesson that @OlaElectric taught to all aspirational startups is that if you wanna disrupt the market come with a solid foolproof product rather than dumping the garbage. ⬇️ (1/14)

It was in the year 2017 I read about a passionate product incubated in IIT Madras. A group of engineers trying to build a world-class eScooter naming the company Ather Energy. EVs are not new to South India. (2/14)
*Below image is the first newsletter I received from Ather
↗️Reva 1994 - a pioneer & first functional EV car started in #Bengaluru later sold to @MahindraRise
↗️@ampere_ev bikes started 2007 in #Coimbatore later invested by @RNTata2000 himself & now sold to Greaves.
They're way ahead of their time when India is not ready for EVs (3/14)

Off late there has been a lot of talk about why Chennai/TN aren’t in the startup race despite the talent density and why BLR/MUM/DEL take most of the honours! Here is a 🧵on my take

In the good old days, #Bengaluru was THE place for IT aspirants across India. Any kid choosing to study IT wanted to be placed in the companies hailing from Bangalore

Most Indian IT stalwarts like @Infosys , @TCS , @Wipro and large foreign consulting/product cos chose Bangalore as the hotspot. The city had a unique advantage of having both linguistic and lifestyle compatibility. 3/n

🪡 A cute question on the #HijabRow in #Karnataka is: “Why can’t the CM stop it when it’s ruining the State’s image?”

Answer: “Have you seen @BSBommai’s record?”

He was home minister for 23 months from Aug 2019. It was because he met all the KPIs that he was made @CMofKarnataka
2️⃣ @BSBommai was home minister when school children in #Bidar were charged with sedition, for a line in a play that “insulted” @narendramodi during the anti-CAA protests. Bommai had the temerity to say: “It is a very serious and sensitive case.”

3️⃣ @BSBommai is an “educated” politician, an engineer. In #Bidar, the school children charged with sedition were between 9 and 12 years of age. Najumunissa, 35, a single mother, spent a week in jail because police under Bommai’s watch charged her Class V daughter. @IndianExpress

A meeting with the Karnataka Cooperative Minister Sri @STSomashekarMLA & Dept. of Cooperation has been scheduled on 09-02-2022.

Even today, most depositors of these banks continue to struggle to recover their hard-earned funds, leading to financial distress for the past 2 years.
Nearly 100 people have lost their lives. Many of their family members, as well as depositors, have been meeting me on several occasion.

In the past, I had taken up this issue on a war footing so that senior citizens and co-depositors can live in peace.

So today, I booked a Rapido Bike (@RapidoCares ) from Koramangala, Bangalore, and was waiting to get picked up. My ride came in no time and I was about to get on the bike when one Auto Driver (Who also is tied up with Rapido Auto Service) stopped my bike driver -
- asked him if he is working for Rapido Bike, told him to cancel the ride in front of me. The auto driver started raising his voice and gradually all his auto driver friends joined him. Some actually started recording him along with me (without my permission). -
- I was very angry and did not want to get into some feud because I am not a local and do not know their mother tongue. With my past experiences, I have learned that they discriminate against anyone who does not speak their language. -

While the Hon'ble High Court ordered the state government to consider these employees' requests, it is disheartening to note that they do not fall under the category of state employees.

Even the committee constituted by the Director of Medical Education recommended the government to extend the cashless health scheme benefits to the employees of the above mentioned institutions.

26.1.2022 ~ 630 AM -Outside KSR Railway station (SBC)
– I was in the process of getting out when a #BBMP Marshall threatened me in #Hindi to step to the side by yelling at me,”mask kyu nahi paina? Photo dikavu kya??”

Me, in my mind - Do I bloody look like North Indian to these jokers?
Me: ‘yakappa, #Kannada baravallva?’
Marshall 1 : aaythu aaythu, Baa side ge… kattu fine’u -two pipty kattu !! (his tone was like I was a war-criminal on the loose)
I realized they had rounded about 5 more men (poor looking – north Indian men) I was the 6th. I was observing the 5 helpless men and the two #BBMP marshalls – I loved their arrogance of #BBMP marshalls on us (common people).

In November, schools in Karnataka reopened after being closed due to the second wave of COVID-19. The initial shift from offline to online classes was difficult for students, parents, teachers to adjust to. But what about the transition back once again to physical schooling? 🧵
But first, the context: India had the world's second-longest shutdown of physical classes in the world, at 82 weeks. 24 crore children were affected, of which, 1 in 4 students did not have access to digital devices. So, it's no wonder that the shift was difficult to adjust to.
But, students and teachers are coming back to school amidst an ongoing pandemic--which is a difficult step in its own way. In Lawrence ICSE and SSLC schools in #Bengaluru, schools have taken as many safety precautions as they can to keep these parties safe.

That time of the year & as always, putting down in one thread a whole bunch of #IndianSF (spec-fic) i've read & recommended this year; short fiction you can read right now, online & for free. If there was a Year's Best Indian Speculative Fiction, these would be on it. Here goes:
"The Demon Sage's Daughter" by @varshadineshs over at @strangehorizons goes beyond boring Mahabharata fanfic & tired mythsploitation. Quite the retelling of the Kacha/Shukracharya story as Devayani makes it hers, with versions to shape her destiny…
Savour the taste of love, memories & relationships; get swept into Indian cuisine & ideas of marriage/relationships in "Taste of Your Name" by @Jerun_onto in @TranslunarTL, featuring some truly delectable prose. This one may make you hungry.… #IndianSF

#Thread - #Bengaluru Airport:
What exactly happened in Bengaluru airport that led to the flooding/stagnation a few days before?
My version:

Before the airport, area (marked in white) was in a ridge between 2 valleys, had cropland, quarries, a minor valey, open scrubland
Even after the completion of phase I which was the runway in the northern side and the terminal, the minor valley was not affected significantly as it was all limited to the northern side. One quarry site also remained holding stagnant water.
This map gives you the terrain of the airport area and one can easily notice the ridge on which it was built. Water was supposed to drain into the main valleys through the minor valley.
Approximate water flow directions are marked for better understanding of terrain
