Is giving away free curb parking to some – & nothing to ppl who cannot afford (or choose not to own) a car – fair?

@IDoTheThinking recently pointed out that indeed it is unfair & detrimental to offer free parking - but paid public transit - on Sundays.

This is a🧵about parking
The great @DonaldShoup tells us: “if cities charge the right price for curb parking - the lowest price that will produce 1 or 2 open parking spaces on each block - all drivers will have great parking karma & no one will need to circle for parking.” More:
With a Parking Benefit District, we can manage curb parking as valuable real estate & STOP SUBSIDIZING cars, congestion & pollution.

It’s a simple concept: charge for curb parking & reinvest net revenue in public services like cleaning sidewalks, planting street trees & more.

ARPA funds + Infrastructure Bill should restore all AC Transit lines in Berkeley ASAP in 2022. Line 80 needs to be re-directed from Albany to North Berkeley to make it a high ridership line and it should be done early 2022. The free Sunday day helps advertise for buses. #berkmtg
Bartlett and Taplin are very irritated that there's no bus service on Ashby. It doesnt make any sense for @rideact to have not re-directed the 79 down Ashby already instead of postponing it until the next year. Its not getting riders on Claremont.
@JesseArreguin @TaplinTerry should demand they put the 79 back on Ashby Avenue immediately. Irrespective of whether it gets passed, with kids back at Willard and it being a crucial crosstown street it needs to come back now not summer 2022

Now onto the next (and sole remaining item) on this special #berkmtg agenda: Interim rules to be used by the new Police Accountability Board and director of police accountability for handling complaints against @berkeleypolice. There are two alternatives. THREAD. #berkmtg
@berkeleypolice There are 3 major differences btw director + board versions: (1) who may file complaint (board wants witnesses + board to be able to file); (2) extension of timeline from 90 to 180 days; (3) board would like complainant to stay in room during hearing + ask questions #berkmtg

Starting now with Item A: a proposed waiver of Berkeley's Sanctuary City Ordinance for Motorola Solutions lease. The contract with Motorola will save the city $1M, the city manager says. #berkmtg
The majority of police + fire radios were purchased in 2011 and have exceeded their useful life, the city manager says. Motorola is the only entity with equipment the city can work with, she says, because the radios need to be encrypted; it's part of a statewide system. #berkmtg
"This is the only solution that we haven't available to us," says Dee Williams-Ridley. There are no other options. #berkmtg

SO WHAT DOES ZONING REFORM HAVE TO DO WITH THE HOUSING ELEMENT? Every ~8 years the city is required by law to update its Housing Element. @Scott_Wiener introduced a bill to help cities across CA address the myriad of problems we face because people don't have places to live.
As I mentioned, Berkeley has to zone for 9,000 homes so...we have to figure out where and how to do it. Here are Alameda County's draft numbers.
We've heard from some ppl that we should appeal for lower numbers. I disagree for many reasons. In fact, I believe if we did that, we would probably get a higher allocation. @CSElmendorf @EthanElkind @mc_lens @elpaavo @trounstine et al wrote about it here…

Here's the council tonight, all smiles after Mayor @JesseArreguin accidentally moved CM @loridroste to the attendee pool. Public comment will be limited to be one minute today due to large numbers expected. #berkmtg Image
The mayor is recognizing a grim milestone for the United States — 500,000+ deaths to COVID-19, with 35 of them in Berkeley. March 1 will be a day of remembrance in the city.
He says it could have been prevented through more effective federal action, supported by science. #berkmtg
