TEN YEARS AGO today, at my Indiana kitchen counter, I created a Facebook page that became @MomsDemand. I never imagined we'd become the largest grassroots organization and, with @Everytown and @StudentsDemand, twice the size of the NRA with 10M supporters. wbur.org/hereandnow/202…
A decade ago, gun safety was the third rail of American politics. A quarter of all Dems in Congress had NRA A-ratings. The NRA wielded outsized influence and could generate angry calls and emails to lawmakers. And there was no national gun safety grassroots movement to stop them.
When Manchin-Toomey failed in Congress in 2013, we could have backed down. Instead, we doubled down, building a grassroots movement that could take down the gun lobby. We educated voters, met with lawmakers at all levels, and demanded gun safety in statehouses and in the streets.
I'm the DC Chapter co-Lead of @MomsDemand. It's really a lot of work. There's a lot to do in this city and our advocacy is 2-fold. I'm gonna tell you about it. Because there are so many layers. And the past week has almost taken me out of this role.
3 years ago, my then-4 yo was in preK4 at the public school 2 blocks away. I was working full time and shootings were regular national AND local news stories. I was lamenting to a client that as Black Americans, my kids are 10x more likely to die by gun than their white peers.
At that time I didn't think my son was participating in active shooter drills. She told me he was; and she gave me the right words to ask him about it so I could know for sure. That day when picked him up I asked and cried as he gave me the answer I didn't know to assume.
A friend wrote me describing the feeling of devastation and helplessness as we fall back into the same arguments, the same anger, the same thoughts and prayers, the same, the same. Then she challenged me: what are five things individuals can do to make change on gun violence?/1
Here’s what I said:
1. Support companies who are taking steps to make communities safer and end gun violence. @Dicks, @llbean and @Toms are great examples. And don’t forget the @wnba wears orange. Plenty of others too, find them out. /2

2. Support local organizations working in communities to make change. Two of my favorites are @NCST_newark, a violence interruptor program, and @guitarsoverguns, a youth program that provides music education and mentorship in communities heavily impacted by gun violence. /3

I wrote this 2 years ago. The reason I’ve been in isolation for over a week is b/c I responded on 9/11 and got sick. I was 21 and it was my job. That day and the days that followed were hard to get through. I’m not sure why young people are finding it so hard to simply stay home.
