The @CDCgov suicide data for 2021 is out. Let’s review.

So deaths by suicide dropped in 2019 and 2020. But they rose in 2021 and are almost up to the peak in 2018. There were 14.1 deaths by suicide per 100,000 in 2021 (the rate was 14.2 per 100,000 in 2018)
Deaths by suicide were highest in Native American/Alaska Native (AI/AN) persons (28.1 per 100,000). This represented a 26% increase from 2018.

Never assume someone is coping well because they have not asked for help.

In much of the US, asking for help is seen as a sign of weakness. There’s a reason we, as mental health professionals, tend not to see people when the depression is just starting or people are a little anxious. We are the last resort.
Add onto this the stigma of being seen as “weak.” Asking for help is erroneously viewed as a sign of weakness, when in reality it is a sign of significant strength.

No one needs to handle everything on their own. But the message we are consistently given is we should be able to

This was 2 months after high school graduation. My classmate was missing for 7 months. The devastation & grief were immense after the unexpected loss. We were naïve teenagers facing overwhelming sadness. Eventually her death was ruled a #suicide. #ph260720
In 2016, while living with my best friend, I briefly had a #suicidal roommate. The aftermath of my classmate’s death inspired me to study suicide, but I was not prepared to be the caretaker to a loved one in her time of crisis. #ph260720
