Surya Dev was married to Sanjana, Vishwakarma's daughter. Through this wedlock, three children : Vaivasvata Manu, Yama (The Lord of Death) and Yami.
However, Sanjana found Surya Dev's heat intolerable. So, she left for her father's house asking Chhaya to take her place.

Since Chhaya looked just like Sanjana, everything went normal for Surya Dev and his three children. By Chhaya, Surya Dev had three more children: Savarnamanu, Shani (famously, Saturn) and Tapti.

It is believed that after killing Narakasura, Bhagwan Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who welcomed him by applying a tilak on his forehead. And since then, this day is celebrated as BhaiDooj.

On this day, a brother should go to his sister’s house and the sister should do his aukshan. Also, yamadeepdan, yamatarpan and prayer to Deity Yama should be performed.
