Language and turns of phrase:

My sentences, wording, has been joked by those who don’t understand. I read books to learn spoken language & only heard those around me in my limited capacity. So I speak oddly. I say things like:

How are you fairing?

That makes my heart feel….
The Whidden Hall resident advisor the year I was there was quite amused by my phrasing, assuming it was because I was a “newbie” (from New Brunswick, living in Ontario). But it was more than that and I was happy to watch her amusement in my phrasing.
Wording & social interactions is an interesting level of observation to me. To word properly, to say it at the right sound level, using appropriate tone, just in case. Then reevaluate it all later to learn better for next time. Imagine doing all that in English & French. Haha

Favorite facts about #languages and #cultures in #contact
In #Arabic we say: “Footprints indicate trajectory”, but I never thought that a wheel would reveal a culture. This is how #cultures can be traced through #languages. The reading made me feel like I am solving a puzzle more than exploring languages.
Think twice before starting to learn #English, cuz you’ll end up learning even more -- #German and #French, and more …
After all, it was the Anglo-Saxons and Normans who influenced the vocabulary!!
English is a mixed #language!

(m. Link) /1
Kurze Einordnung #Lesen #Deutschunterricht #bilingualism #Zweisprachigkeit: Höckel zeigt m. Daten d.

Many families (mine included) face tough decisions on what #languages to speak at home. There's a lot of #myths about early #bilingualism , like:
-Kids will get confused
-They'll have lang delays
-They won't learn the majority/dominant language

More info: hanen.org/Helpful-Info/A…
In my family, my dad spoke #arabic and my mom spoke #english. My dad was concerned about me learning English so after about 5 y/o, we hardly spoke Arabic. Since I didn't have any Arabic-speaking peers or teachers, my Arabic suffered attrition and now I understand, but not speak
My case isn't uncommon either-many early #bilinguals and #heritagespeakers often don't have the linguistic support systems (at home or in school) to maintain their languages, due to factors such as lang myths, discrimination, lang policy in schools, etc
