In the wake of the #BillCosby conviction, excuse me if I don’t applaud the movement or even feel some contempt and cynicism.
Let’s be honest, before last year, most reading this tweet had no clue about #MeToo.
Cynicism about #MeToo isn’t because of a lack of empathy for the women who have bravely shared their experiences of sexual victimization. On the contrary, it has to do with America being blind do yet another disparity that pushes people of color to the fringes.
Criticism, cynicism, and contempt for #MeToo is partly because the movement became widespread, comprehensive, and ubiquitous only after it was hijacked from Tarana Burke, a black activist who created it 10 years ago for women of color.
THREAD: Closing arguments have wrapped for #BillCosby’s retrial. Over the years, nearly 60 women have accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault, but this retrial hasn't received a lot of attention. Here’s what you need to know about Cosby’s predatory behavior and the retrial:
Bill Cosby is facing three counts of aggravated indecent assault. Last year, the first trial against Cosby ended in a mistrial because jurors couldn't come to a unanimous verdict on any of the three charges. usatoday.com/story/life/peo…#MeToo
The woman at the center of the retrial is former Temple University employee Andrea Constand—she accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2004. Constand sued Cosby in 2005 and received a settlement, but came forward again in 2015. nytimes.com/2018/04/13/art…#MeToo
Some men find it very hard to believe that these things are so common, because they would never DO those things. If I were a man and I hadn’t experienced harassment and inappropriate behavior multiple times, I would probably find it difficult to believe. 2 #MeToo#BelieveHer
I decided to share about what I’ve experienced, so that good men who respect women can start to understand that these things happen to women know they know, work with, are related to, and love, every day. Their friends, neighbors, coworkers, relatives. 3 #sexualharassment
Puisque les langues se délient pour faire passer aux agresseurs un sale quart d’heure, j’aimerais lister ici les hommes célèbres qui ont été accusés ou condamnés en raison de violences sexuelles qu’ils ont vraisemblablement commises. #AgresseurLuiAussi #BalanceTonAgresseur
