"I'm not going to pretend there's a unified theory of #innovation, and I'm going to explain why."

We begin with a tale of #Minitel: the original, now-extinct French "Web"...and then back further to #ARPANet...and then to theoretical precursors.

"There is no first-principles definition for #innovation."

"How could a company start with selling books online when people want to see a book in person and look through it? Nonetheless, @amazon survived..."

Before Amazon, Books.com on TelNet, later bought by B&N ImageImageImageImage

Lately I have been talking to some students and friends about various places to look for academic positions. Because there is no ONE-FOR-ALL space to find opportunities, here is a thread summarizing the ones I know of 1/34 #AcademicTwitter #phdchat #phd #internationalPhD
Having said that, I must emphasize that this #database is skewed towards #Asians and #Indians (and other #internationals) to study in #EU #UK or #USA in general and is certainly not exhaustive. I have no info. on #NSF grants for example or grants within India. 2/34
Most importantly, I’m hoping this thread helps #colouredwomeninSTEM & #WomeninSTEM, please feel free to RT. And as a #biologist, I am more aware of databases in #ecology, #wildlife, #evolution and #conservation circles, feel free to add more and share. Let’s dive right in! 3/34

Meet Dr Iman Izimi @ImanAzimiUTAS, a medical researcher from @UTAS_MedSci @TasSchoolMed @UTAS_ on the hunt for new cancer therapies with fewer side effects

A thread 👇

Medulloblastoma is the most common fatal childhood brain cancer, with less than 60% of children surviving high-risk medulloblastoma. Current treatment options are not completely effective and include surgery, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy
Due to the harsh nature of these treatments, children who do survive the cancer often develop physical, cognitive, social and emotional impairments. New treatments with fewer side effects are urgently needed

1/ Woo! My monster paper with Matt Wilson, "Locomotor and Hippocampal Processing Converge in the Lateral Septum" was just released in @CurrentBiology!! Not only that, but I made a comic to describe my findings!! cell.com/current-biolog…
2/ We used tetrodes to record from CA1 hippocampus and dorsolateral lateral septum, an area innervated by all CA regions of the hippocampus and many regions involved in "motivational" behavior
3/ Some cells in the LS were linearly modulated by the animal's running speed (could be positively or negatively modulated!) and/or by the animal's acceleration (also could be positively or negatively modulated!)
