Scientists at the University of Tokyo have developed a skin-like coating of collagen and human dermal fibroblasts for a three-jointed robotic finger. According to Shoji Takeuchi, the lead author of this study,
living skin is the ultimate solution to give robots the appearance and sense of touch of living beings.

Currently there aren’t any commercially available haptic feedback systems for these devices. The only way I “know” how hard I’m grabbing is from practice - whether it’s on my own body [you can find me pinching myself quite frequently] or on an egg. 🍳🤖
When you take vision out of the equation (as in me not looking at my hand), if it’s a task I’ve done enough like shaking hands, it’s down to muscle memory. 🤖🤝🤖
