1/ Pres. Paul Biya's New Year's #BiyaSpeech was relatively unremarkable compared to previous years, w/ no major announcements or provocative statements that go beyond what is the norm. It is still worth examining as it demonstrates the thinking of the gov on several fronts.
2/ At the outset of the speech, a large amount of time was given to #COVID, claiming that the gov. "t is yielding excellent results," ironic given the lack of public data, & viral stories of people needing to pay to get a negative test.
3/ While it is true that testing is quite accessible in urban areas, there is virtually no data on cases & deaths being shared. This leads to confusion & having no way of grasping the state of the pandemic in Cameroon. See below the @Reuters graph, this dataset is unrealistic. 
1/ #BiyaSpeech on the #AnglophoneCrisis is an example of how the crisis got to where it is today. Gov of #Cameroon claims that all initial demands made in 2016 have been met- and that Anglophone marginalization is a myth- did not address the grave human rights abuses committed.
2/ Biya reiterated the claim that arson, rape, kidnappings & targeted killings have only been committed by #Ambazonia secessionists. In reality- his forces, especially the BIR, were the first to carryout such abuses, worsening the #AnglophoneCrisis .
3/ Biya hinted that the Gov. does not support the Swiss initiative for dialogue & instead announced his own initiative. This initiative will be politicized and will evidently not include members of the #SouthernCameroons diaspora. In short- it will go no where.
As scientific & technological advancement is endowing humanity with more & more extraordinary powers each day, will the “new world” that is being heralded take a wrong turn & revert to the divisions & quarrels of yesteryear? Our future depends on it. May common sense prevail

You would recall that last year, I deplored before you the fact that the spirit of conciliation is on the wane on the global scene. In this regard, the situation does not seem to have improved significantly. 11/12

We have, like in the past, maintained close ties with the African Union. We endeavoured to contribute to the reform of its institutions, which is expected to enhance integration and ensure its financial autonomy. 10/12
