2020 was an important year in #BlackCatholichistory. The US got its 1st Black cardinal & a host of new initiatives supporting the study, teaching, & celebration of the #BlackCatholic past were launched across the country. Here's to more good news in 2021!

The Black Woman Who Biked Across the US Alone During the 1930s Jim Crow Era was named #BessieStringfield and she was a #BlackCatholic. #TheMotorcycleQueenofMiami vice.com/en/article/qvx…
Born in 1911, Stringfield got her first motorcycle, a 1928 Indian Scout, while she was still in her teens and taught herself how to ride it. vice.com/en/article/qvx…
At the age of 19, young Stringfield flipped a penny onto a map of the US then ventured out on her bike alone. Interstate highways didn’t yet exist at the time, but the rough, unpaved roads didn’t deter her. bit.ly/36McNji

Made my (second) return to Mass since 'Rona. Just so happened to be Confirmation Sunday!

You already know I *quickened*. We snatched up the organist and everything! (And an older dude; ecumenical marriage, grown Catholic kids, all that. You love to see it! 🙌🏾)

Pray for them!
Plus I finally finessed—with permission—a copy of "Lead Me, Guide Me", the #BlackCatholic hymnal.

A few #BlackPriest friends said to get this edition, as the 2nd doesn't include Dr #TheaBowman's historic(al) prologue.

I always liked this look, anyway. 🖤 Image
Also reconnected w/ the good Br Herman. Then ran into him today at @XULA1925—discovering he's a Spanish professor there and a Dominican brother.

He learned I'm applying to the Josephites, schooled/encouraged me over lunch, and shared this letter he wrote.

Hi Folks! I'm still on break. However, I have received lots of messages & emails over the past few days requesting scholarly book & article recommendations to help contextualize the contemporary moment re: the #CatholicChurch & #BLM. So, here you go:
The story of the rise & fall of the #FederatedColoredCatholics of the US-esp. the clerical supplanting of Black lay leader Dr. Thomas W. Turner-is ESSENTIAL reading for these times. Start w/ Marilyn Nickels & David Southern. Links are provided below. #BlackCatholicHistoryMatters
1. David Southern, *John LaFarge and the Limits of Catholic Interracialism,* 1996. (esp. chapters 5 & 6)

TIL I learned that @NipseyHussle's maternal grandmother is a #BlackCatholic.

Apparently she said so on TV after he died, noting that she forgave and prays for his murderer. 😶

(H/T @henokeliyahu, who—at the request of Nip's dad's Eritrean Orthodox parish—served at his funeral.)
#RIPNip!!

Pray for him and his family, please. And the entire South LA community.
(Oh, and here's Henok's blog about the funeral! medium.com/@henokelias/ni…)

"Carl Friedrich, the Divine Word procurator general... found [several high-ranking members of the Roman Curia] particularly supportive of a seminary for Blacks.

Cardinal Laurenti even arranged a private audience for Friedrich with Pope Benedict XV, who applauded the plan"
"When Friedrich referred to the possible opposition of some American bishops to the project, Benedict observed that it made no difference whether they objected, since he, the pope, supported the plan and “above the bishops stands the Pope.”"
"If Janser experienced difficulties with bishops, the pope instructed Friedrich, Janser should appeal directly to the Holy Father."

“This isn’t very Christian, but at one of our meetings, we discussed whether or not there was such a thing as a decent white man.”

natcath.org/NCR_Online/arc…

(From the @NCRonline archives, on Dr. Arthur G Falls, #BlackCatholic and founder of the first Chicago Catholic Worker.)
"“The time is not opportune,” the official church used to say when confronted by [racist] moral outrages. “The time was never opportune,” Dr. Falls recalled.

“But... Those who were responsible always knew what they were doing. And that included church leaders.”"
"[Falls attended] @NorthwesternU's Medical School, where the professors in the gross anatomy lab would assure the students they needn’t be nervous about making mistakes.

“Don’t worry about it,” they were told. “We can always go out on the street and get a nigger to dissect.”"
