15 years ago we asked ourselves, what would happen if we gave independent brands the same commerce tools as major retailers?

Answer: 1.5 billion in sales by Shopify merchants in 3 days - that’s not even including Cyber Monday.
I’ve been talking a lot about direct-to-consumer being a steady state for retail. Here’s why consumers are choosing DTC:

1. The experience of buying direct is much better
2. Makers don’t share their margins + pass savings on
3. Consumers want to support independent businesses
What we’ve observed after 3 days of #BlackFriday2019:

The spending categories aren’t different from what they’ve been historically. People are buying accessories, cosmetics, apparel and appliances but what’s different is that they’re buying them directly from manufacturers.

I’m willing to bet that when people look back at #BlackFriday2019 they’ll remember it as the year where the market saw a paradigm shift around direct-to-consumer retail. Independent businesses are thriving and they’re going to take down the big boxes & mass marketplaces.
Last year during #BFCM:

- Americans spent a record $14 billion online
- Shopify merchants hit a record $1.5 billion in sales globally

Let’s break some fucking records. 🔥
