We now see how a book is banned even before release. A certain British gentleman seems responsible for this.

This is not new.

It happened before in 1907.

An Indian wrote a history book.
Brits banned it even before it released.

That Indian? Veer Savarkar.

#bloomsburyindia
It's funny to me because I'm writing the chapters about how Savarkar tried to get his book published but found it impossible as the British empire threatened and scared every publisher.

The modus operandi hasn't changed in 113 years. #bloomsburyindia
Savarkar wrote a book about the history of the 1857 revolt, and was the first one to call it the First War Of Indian Independence, as opposed to Sepoy Mutiny.

Obviously the British didn't like that. #bloomsburyindia

Two fascinating strands emerging from the #bloomsburyindia saga. First, Chinese whispers of it being a @BloomsburyBooks UK call (not @BloomsburyIndia) at the behest of some celeb Bloomsbury author (of Indian origin or residing in India); Second, the Left-Lib scored a 'self-goal'
2/n as it would lead to the creation of a RW Publishing House on the lines of @SwarajyaMag and @OpIndia_com. This indicates two things IMO - 1)The domestic Le-Li constituency is frustrated by shrinking media platform within India; Hence, an attempt to shield #bloomsburyindia
3/n 2) Increased dependence on the NRI and Expat Le-LI Club to build pressure thru foreign media. Expect this trend to grow louder in the coming days. But, just like Congress the more vocal they get they'll be drowned under the din their own voice in the echo-chamber. #bloomsbury

#Bloomsbury reneging on its contract to publish the book on Delhi Riots 2020 is an example of how leftists never learn. I have an alternate take, follow the thread.
It’s a well known fact that leftists have rants, right has facts, leftists have soft power, right has money, leftists are agenda peddlers and right is reactionary and that’s why the Bloomsbury episode will backfire majorly.
Alright so someone had written a book about Delhi Riots. Fine. She got a publisher. Great. The book would have released, some people would have bought it and cursed the “ones” behind it. End of the story.

#Bloomsbury book retraction: an explanation for Dummies (liberals)

Series of events:
1. A pogrom happened in Delhi last February
2. Recently, Bloomsbury published a book that presented the perpetrator's perspective and thereby sought to perpetuate the fascist narrative further
3. A launch event was planned for the book with the main perpetrators as chief guests

4. Some of us highlighted this on social media to Bloomsbury and voiced our strong protest about what they are doing by publishing such a book and organising such a launch event
5. Bloomsbury responded that the event is being conducted without their knowledge, that their logo is being misused, realised their mistake after seeing the guest list for the launch event, and decided to retract the book

6. Some of you started crying about "banning books"

1. The emergence of the flyer announcing #KapilMishra's role on the panel that would launch the book on #DelhiRiots.
2. The relentless outrage on social media (expected).
3. The book launch cancelled just hours before the scheduled time.

Doesn't this seem a tad too scripted?

I'm finding it very hard to believe that #Bloomsbury hadn't done any due diligence thus far (like seriously?), & chose to renege today owing to a sudden moral awakening. The Right Wing knew this all along - they just wanted to use this as a bait to counter the Liberal Brigade

I can almost feel it - this is just the start of a conscious attempt to prove that, in some cases, liberals have v thin skins and anuses that get inflamed easily. Further, the proceedings will be mangled to engineer a rift among public intellectuals - signs visible already.

Many people, who were disgusted at the @BloomsburyIndia move to publish the Delhi Riots book, are also equally disappointed at the publisher's withdrawal from publication. While I understand the free speech concerns, I feel it comes out of a superficial understanding of
... free speech & also a failure to see the power dynamics in the issue. Before elaborating on that, sharing a principle I firmly believe.

'Freedom doesn't mean freedom to monger hate based on distorted facts & one-sided narrative to push the oppressed to further margins'
It is not hard to imagine the contents of the book given the kind of people associated with it. The publication of it would have added insult to the injury of the minorities who are yet to receive any institutional justice or healing wrt riots.
