@DikshaLahoti and I recently concluded a thesis on #bluecollar workforce in India - the exercise helped us develop a strong view on the space!

Capturing key insights from the thesis in a thread below

Definition of a blue-collar worker has changed over the years and today it definitely is not limited to traditional roles in warehousing, construction, manufacturing, and sanitation but has evolved to include jobs created by smartphones and the internet (jiofication).

So, who is this worker? Image 👇 + job is typically mechanical & fungible i.e. requires min to no formal education & can be trained on the job. In the COVID context, those who are either migrating back to the villages or are not working from WFH are blue collar workers.

1/ Thread on key gaps and opportunities I see in the blue and grey collar recruitment and staffing industry in India. I believe there is an opportunity to build a ‘vertical focussed’ tech-enabled ‘full stack’ staffing business.

2/ Lets start by unpacking India’s workforce. It’s est. that ~40% of India’s population is working i.e. ~500M ppl. Of this, ~230M (46%) are employed in agriculture, either self employed or working in other people’s farms.
3/ ~60M ppl (12%) are employed in the construction and infra sector - primarily as labourers. Then comes the retail sector with ~45M ppl (9%) - primarily mom and pop store owners and the ppl employed in such stores.

I remember this feeling 👇🏻 so distinctly when I started at @NorthwesternU.

Tho not #FirstGen, growing up in an impoverished rural area (WV) with not great schools, attending a highly selective school was a huge culture shock. 🧵

Although I did very well in the end, I had a very rough start. I was convinced my admission was a mistake.

The culture was completely foreign to me & I didn’t begin to know how to navigate it. My parents had attended a very small, not selective LA school - not much help there./
I remember being overwhelmed by the level & speed of my classes and marveled at the other freshman who seemed to learn so much faster than I could - I later learned many had already taken the classes in private HS & but retook then to boost their GPA. 3/
