the chicken or the egg?

The media, at large, keeps harping back to Trump said the media is 'the enemy of the people' in the face of this #BombHoax

That fact evidences the media’s blissful self delusion they currently reside in... Allow me to explain...

#Midterms2018 shaping up to be deja vu all over again. In 2016, one of the ways Trump won was by dominating the information network. Some days in 2016, our mid-term coverage finished with 6 lead stories on Trump and hardly 1 on Clinton. 1/x
Fair enough if everyone knows the rules of the game. Far from clear Trump's opponents in 2016 (Rs and Ds) knew those rules. The risk in 2018 is that the political discussion needed for democracy gets hijacked by spectacle external to the core event of the vote. 2/x
Despite the news of caravan as symbol and the very real whodunnit news of the #bombscare, the US media needs to keep reporting on voters, issues, elections and the democratic process. The public needs to click on those stories. 3/x

I take exception to the assurtion with regard to this #BombScare proclaiming

"This is where we are as a nation."

With all due respect, that is media hyperbole. The nation is not what one person or group does. We know very little yet that proclamation is universally made.
There has been suspicious packages going to the president time and time again. No one said "this is where we are as a nation" let alone breathlessly cover the events.

This sort of news is shocking. Fortunately, the incompetence of whoever is sending these packages means that no one has been hurt.

The news reminds me of other bomb threats, which I sometimes discuss with students (1/12).

In April and June 1919 anarchists sent a string of bombs to current and former high-ranking U.S. officials. None of the intended targets were killed, but a nightwatchman outside the home of New York judge Charles Cooper Nott was killed. (2/12) medium.com/cato-institute…
One of the bombs blew the hands off a maid working for ex-senator Thomas Hardwick. Anarchists sent dozens of these bombs. One of these bombs detonated early, killing the wannabe assassin killing Carlo Valdinoci outside Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer’s home. (3/12)
