Can we always be connected?

A thread #4 🧵 inspired by a book 📚 “The Culture Code” by @DanielCoyle

“Culture is a set of living relationships working toward a shared goal. It’s not something you are. It’s something you do.”

#BookRecommendations #agile
1/11
"The Culture Code" provides great insights into how successful teams are created, shares ideas distilled from scientific research and close examination of many successful groups: sport, navy, comedians, jewellery thieves or modern software companies, eg. Google, Pixar,IDEO.
2/11
This book explains that there is no mystery behind great teams, but it’s rather a process that can be understood and controlled. It shows also that building a cohesive team requires a constant and conscious effort; a team is not built at once and once only.

I’ve read about 150 books (mostly on management, leadership and business) in the last five years. Here are books I recommend for those transitioning into a leadership role, and/or are middle managers. #BookRecommendations #leadership
Transitioning into a leadership role is very exciting but can be challenging. As a leader, you have to effectively (1) lead yourself, (2) lead & inspire others, (3) manage time, resources, and projects to get results. Here're the books I recommend. Five on on each (1, 2 & 3)
On self-leadership:
1. Managing Oneself by Peter Drucker
2. True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership by Bill George, Peter Sims
3. Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

I have an annual book reading average of 30+ and 2021 was no different. So, I thought I'd post (for the first time) my top ten books of the year. I tend to read a diverse array, from philosophy and epistemology to science and current issues. So, not in any particular order..
This book written by Rob Brotherton (@rob_brotherton) was a fantastic read on why people believe in conspiracy theories, and how we are all prone to nonsensical thinking - it's not just an affliction of people on the fringes of society wearing tinfoil hats
In a similar fashion, Michael Shermer (@michaelshermer) tackles the psychology and neurobiology of why we believe in pseudoscientific nonsense and unsupported claims

I first read this book in 2009 after losing 80% of my monies on Penny stocks as a student when the 2008 drawdown happened.

Thought it was too simple !

Now in 2021, I think this is one of the best books to absorb & implement.

Investing means different things to different people - Be it health/ career/external assets with an intent to reap benefits in future.

So then is everyone an Investor ?
No.
When people do different things with even same investment products we give it a different name.

Investing is a PERSONAL Plan .
It's NOT a product . NOT a procedure.

One needs to have a clear picture of one's financials BEFORE making an investment plan.

Investment products comprise of items with distinct characteristics DESIGNED to satisfy a particular need.

🔸On How to Minimise Risk ?

* Look at long term volatility of Cash Flows ( assuming Financial Statements paint a fair picture )

* Check if business generates Free Cash Flow ( FCF). This ensures company is unlikely to be wiped out at the bottom of the cycle.

🔸Management Integrity matters.

You notice good governance only when it is gone !
Hence unless one has demonstrable proof on a long term basis that people are honest , consider them to be crooks .
Cynical approach but helps save us from losses !

In-house editor @whatallydid shares a book recommendation, just in time for the weekend. If you’ve been looking for something immersive, look no further. #reading #fantasy #nkjemisin #bookrecco
@whatallydid says: "I was late to the N.K Jemisin phenomena, but I'm almost grateful that I didn't discover her before. Because her Broken Earth series got me through the first few terrible weeks of lockdown."
I don't want to give away too much of the plot because it's SO interesting. But at the time, the world seemed to be spinning off its axis and in Jemisin's books, we learn what happens after the world ends. Again. And again. And again.

What would YOU do if you KNOW your time on earth is limited ?

Would you
Wallow in Self Pity & Wither away ?
OR
Decide to make the Best Use of whatever time is left ?

Would you walk THAT final bridge between LIFE & DEATH whilst narrating your trip ?

Affinity to some books tend to grow over time . The more we read them , the more they force us to pause, reflect & introspect .

Tuesdays with Morrie by @MitchAlbom does that !

It is Raw , yet Real.
Simple , but Complex.
Dark , but Humourous.
Obvious , yet Profound.

Morrie the Professor on his deathbed ( due to ALS) & Mitch , his super successful student meet after a gap of 16 long years for ONE LAST CLASS every Tuesday .

The subject being " The Meaning of Life " , taught purely from experience with a funeral in lieu of graduation .

Let's do a thing. Should we do a thing? Let's promote women+ who've written books about #HigherEd, shall we? I'm going to pull from the #HigherEd reads list we started in January.

Using Amazon for sanity: please consider your independent bookstores if purchasing.
Before I get to books, let me take a moment to direct you to @womeninhighered, led by @kelly_j_baker. What would we do without this feminist #HigherEd publication? I hope we never have to find out.

CHAPTER 1

What we experience early on (in our adult life) is more compelling than what we learn second hand, which is why each person thinks about #Risk & #Reward DIFFERENTLY.

In theory we SHOULD make our investments based on OUR goals & options available.
3/31

However we tend to include our unique experiences of how the world works (albeit with incomplete information) which might seem crazy to others .

* Spreadsheets cannot replicate human emotions which is why no amount of studying can make one truly UNDERSTAND the underlying.

Key (great) takeaways from Amit Somani’s masterclass on Deep-dive into product-thinking and building for India
[#Thread ]
@Primevp_in @amitsomani @SharmaShradha @YourStoryCo #TechSparks2020 #TechSparksFromHome Image
“I’m an engineer turned product manager turned accidental VC.”
Key things on building a product startup:
➡️Try not to think of yourself as the customer
➡️Think about why it going to made the customer’s life 10x better
➡️It should be a good idea done really well and not necessarily a great idea done moderately well

ATTENTION - there will be no snakes at this Friday's Anti Prom at the library. There was a typo in a local paper that said we will have snakes. We will have snacks. Snacks is what we will have. Image
Not to say we have anything against snakes. In fact, snakes will be at the library in May during the Teen De-Stressing Day: Reptile Hangout, bit.ly/2D2BEjm.
So, just to summarize:
April 12. No snakes. 🐍 ❌
May 22. Yes snakes. 🐍 ✔️
