[1] A recent article in @thewire_in on the NRC process in Assam made me pen some personal thoughts given the recent move to implement it across India. I am not Assamese but was born and brought up there. My father was an IPS officer of the 64 batch of that state's cadre. #NRC
@thewire_in [2] If I still lived in Assam, based on the list of documents required to be 'Indian', I would personally struggle to prove my citizenship and residency. The only document that we may have been able to show is my father's service record.
@thewire_in [3] For that as well, we probably would have had to run around government offices and call in favours. Keep in mind, we are not talking about a relatively poor/ unconnected family - as I mentioned, my father was in the govt and retired as the DGP of Assam.
If CAB is passed and NRC is implemented pan-India, this will result in irreparable loss of secular and democratic ethos of our country. CAB itself can be viewed as legalization of religious discrimination in granting refugees citizenship. (1/8) #BoycottNRC
I don’t know of any secular democratic country that would grant citizenship to refugees on the basis of their religion. Government specifically excludes Muslims. Why not change the constitution and become authoritarian first before doing this! (2/8) #BoycottNRC
The combined effect of NRC and CAB will be that Muslims who can’t prove themselves to be citizens will have no option to do anything, whereas, non-Muslims may use CAB to get citizenship. This is again legalized discrimination against the Muslims. (3/8) #BoycottNRC
