Here is a Youtube comment by a viewer after watching my show on #boycottwomanking. They are literally saying that the film doesn’t make it clear that the Dahomey were mass slavers. And also the palm oil alternative to trading slaves was produced by legions of “brutalized” slaves.
What was done by the movie #womanking in omitting KEY facts to paint a picture of Viola Davis character as an emancipator is plainly AWFUL. And it has left millions of Blacks that saw it confused. Imagine how worse it would have been w/o #boycottwomanking?
In #womanking they presented PALM OIL as a tool of emancipation to millions. WHEN PALM OIL PRODUCTION WAS ACTUALLY BRUTAL SLAVERY AT MASS SCALE. Our ancestors were enslaved by the Dahomey making Palm Oil under horrible conditions often leading to disease, sickness, & even death.

The gravity of the atrocities skipped over by #womanking can't be put into words. The #BoycottWomanKing protest should be an awakening for #ados Black Americans as to the GAPS in their own identity. "The African Trade" by History is a good primer. WATCH:
The #WomanKing Dahomey traded about 3 mill of our ancestors but other countries & their progeny have been able to live on a flat blackness that Black Americans have blindly anchored. There still were 9 mill more sold up the African coast for hundreds of years. #BoycottWomanKing
Part of the reason this isn’t resonating as it should is first there is no video. And we now learn visually. And also we don’t grasp the scale. Next time you’re at a packed NFL stadium look around. Imagine all those people enslaved in one place. Multiply that by 200 times.

1) Why isn’t @thr interviewing Maria Bello she said she found the story & also it was her brainchild. We are getting quotes from Viola on womanhood as cover. Why can’t we hear from the person who told us it was her idea & project? #BoycottWomanKing - hollywoodreporter.com/lifestyle/life…
2) Bello only has 1 writing credit on IMDB. #womanking . THERE’s NOTHING before this film. Her writing career starts w/ recreating the genesis of our enslavement. Now millions of Blacks are leaving theaters arguing w/ us w/ her writing as their lineal anchor. #boycottwomanking
“In reality, Dahomey was a notorious slave kingdom, and not the Pan-African freedom fighters as the movie presents them. They enslaved and murdered hundreds of thousands from other tribes and sold them into the slave trade.”

“The woman King is not proven to be profitable in any way. So overall it is coming out that the film will be a box office failure.” thefilmik.com/the-woman-king…
2) They are telling Black America anything on a $19 mill wkd. As an atty that has worked in film I’ll tell you read to get a grasp on per screen avg numbers. #boycottwomanking They opened this #womanking film too wide & many of these theaters were empty. thewrap.com/everything-eve…
3) The Hollywood media has decided to tell Black America anything. #boycottwomanking These numbers are abysmal for a film opening in 3700. Of course its #1 NO movie opened as wide. The other small opening was made for $1 million wasn't in 3700 theaters and will double the budget.

To bring context, I have pulled together this brief “thread”🧵 to not only speak on the Dahomey tribe but other aspects that #Thewomanking does not include. For the inspiration of #BoycottWomenKing, please watch the #Tonetalks video: bit.ly/3QQdFHu

First, some of us are aware of the “Door of No Return”. Others of us are aware that a significant number of slaves were moved from the interior of Africa to the western coast of Africa which is now Ghana, Benin, and even the Ivory Coast. Hence, we were SOLD “not” STOLEN.
In this clip, it is notable that it has been discussed even as far back as 30-35 years ago the role that African Slave Traders took on in the Atlantic Slave Trade. However, there are still some who would like to minimize that role.

I admit I'm surprised to see #BoycottWomanKing trending, and am still looking forward to it, but I somehow doubt this means folks are ready to talk about African complicity in the Atlantic slave trade. Maybe not. Thread.
The slave trade was only possible because it used already existing infrastructure set up by African kingdoms and the Arab slave trade, something else that's still somewhat taboo in US discourse since Arabs are not white.
But when Ibn Battuta visited the kingdom of Mali in the mid 14th century, he noted that citizens competed over how many slaves they had. The Dahomey of modern-day Benin using slaves for human sacrifice in their annual holiday is just one example.

No $17 - 18 million is not a success. I also believe the people that come opening weekend are all the die hard traffic. There won’t be legs. No other group of people would deal with Hollywood avoiding the content’s ties to slavery and clear disrespect.

On one hand this actress says #TheWomanKing is historical, it's real but when promoting this movie they never discuss the REAL history that the Dahomey were African Slave Traders. This movie does not sit right with my soul. #BoycottWomanKing
