This feels like it should be bigger news. More There have only been 4 periods in the history of the pandemic where more in #BritishColumbia have (officially) died WITH (yay, thanks BC for obscuring data) COVID than occurred in the first week of May (May 1-7).
#bcpoli #BCStorm
This is all because BC has intentionally distorted the data. As of April 2, all deaths where a positive test occurred within 30 days are being counted. Die of a car crash + covid test positive? Covid death!

Of course, CDCBC *COULD* easily go back &retroactively apply this definition to the start of the pandemic (this would help us understand what the increasing #'s mean in context), but of course that would severely increase the official count of COVID-19 deaths. Bad politics?

Wednesday's #Covid19 megathread makes an early start as there's so much news to bring you!

#Omicron takes centre stage in Europe with a raft of records (recap coming up), but #UK ministers are increasingly confident the NHS won't be swamped despite England's lack of restrictions
It turned out to be a terrible Tuesday, not just in #UK, which was just one of TEN European countries to hit all time high daily #Covid19 infection numbers.

#Cyprus #France #Greece #Iceland #Italy #Malta #Montenegro #Portugal and #Spain the others to set new records.
Concern in #Norway. The #Omicron wave looked to be beyond the peak; is it making a comeback or is it still delayed Christmas cases?
4,702 new #Covid19 infections, fewer than 100 down on last Weds.

Better health data. 315 in hospital, down 13 since y'day, although 120 are in ICU

#CCGLive: CCGS Cape Calvert and CCGS Cape Naden have evacuated 16 people from the container ship M/V #ZimKingston near Victoria, #BritishColumbia after a fire broke out in ten containers earlier today.
The fire remains a dynamic event and an Incident Command Post has been set up to manage the situation. Responders are mobilizing to both fight the fire and recover the containers that broke away from the ship on Friday.
An Emergency Zone has been set up for 1NM around the ship while fire fighting operations are underway. Currently there is no safety risk to people on shore, however the situation will continue to be monitored.

I have transcribed interesting bits from this interview with department of mathematics at Simon Fraser University and a member of the #COVID19 modelling group.

Markham Hislop asks "And do we know that the government the alberta government had access to your?"
"um well, we, we, um, we released the report and met with alberta government and that's um and shortly thereafter you know sort of simultaneously with that they cancelled the reopening that they had so uh so i think i, i feel that we were heard by them" Dr. Paul Tupper
Markham Hislop asks "okay what about the timing though? When? When did this happen? Like when did you release the report and meet with [the government?]"

I'm simplifying these threads & will now show sliding window views of last 3 months of cumulative data for whole epidemic (except for province-specific summaries at end).

Rate of change graphs are provided for preceding 28 days to give a better sense of most recent dynamics.
Please note that though it's tempting to speculate about recent trends for long-term/personal care & retirement homes, reporting for this sector is VERY delayed & is almost always incomplete for preceding 3-4 weeks. The period of uncertainty is now highlighted in gray in graphs.

I've been watching per capita DEATHS in #Canada & high income peer countries with pop >20M

Because #Canadian #COVID19 case fatality rate (% of confirmed cases who die) has remained stubbornly high.

It's the 3rd highest, after 🇮🇹🇺🇸.
We will soon reach the highest case fatality rate among our peer countries & we've barely started Wave 2.

Look at this graph. Watch it every day. #Canada is NOT doing ok

When we get #COVID19 more of us die than in Spain, France, the USA.

Please, please see this and act.
