It's been just over a year since the death of activist, writer and anthropologist @davidgraeber - a brilliant speaker, writer and thinker who helped give us #Occupy, "we are the 99%" and #BullshitJobs.

On the anniversary of David's death, his widow @nikadubrovsky convened the first "Art Project" discussion, a fascinating debate between @PikettyLeMonde and @michaelwhudson, a pair of political economists whose work is neatly bridged by Graeber's own.

Piketty, of course, is the bestselling French economist whose 2013 Capital in the 21st Century was an unlikely, 700+ page viral hit, describing with rare lucidity the macroeconomics that drive capitalism towards cruel and destabilizing inequality

There seems to be a clot in the Kenyan brain that blocks people from seperating economic problems from education. The #Somenivijana story of going to school for employment was for an exclusive to the colonial civil service and foreign companies. It was not the general economy.
The British caved in to higher education for Africans because it wanted to train a Kenyan civil service that would serve British interests after 1963. That is why uni education got attached to employment. The civil service is a parasitic enterprise. It doesn't grow the economy.
Because the civil service doesn't grow the economy, it soon ran out of employment positions. That was when they 1) said civil servants were allowed to do business and 2) started this evil propaganda of telling Kenyans "rudi mashambani" and stop seeking employment #somenivijana

I have said all I have to say on #BBIreport, which is:

1. It's a waste of Kenyan's time and precious intellect to spend it on the tantrums of malignant narcissists. We should be working where our talent and skills call us to, but we're doing damage control and #bullshitjobs.
We have to have a country where Ndii's talent is used for our economy, not on campaigning to protect Kenya from Muigai's latest tantrums. Or where doctors are employed and working, not doing locums or being jobless while Cuban doctors get cars. #bbireport
2. The political class is useless. It has no talent or skills, and it cant work. It is always looking for ways to make Kenyans work and performing rituals of power and relevance that kill enough of us to truamatize the rest of us. That's all #BBIreport is. fb.watch/2a_uGTulDZ/

What Makes Work Meaningful?

For individuals, and those building organisations, this is an important question.

Self-Transcendent, or working for a higher goal

People are more likely to view work as meaningful when it mattered to others more than just to themselves.

Poignant

Meaningfulness is not always a positive experience. We don’t walk around in a euphoric state all day at work.

"There’s a left wing version of the PRO-WORK position, too.... The idea of a Jobs Guarantee, promises from centre-left parties to “deliver jobs” like they were delicious pizzas, and in defences of the unemployed on the claim that they’re “not lazy”. link.medium.com/dHX1czqWi8
"We must be willing, like a soldier dreaming of heroism, to sacrifice our lives for the institutions in which we work. Usually this is just one day at a time, but in the age of #covid19, things can get uglier, with low wage workers expected to put themselves at serious risk."
"A Jobs Guarantee works like this: The government will offer an unlimited number of decent jobs with decent pay. No one who applies will be turned away. This would force other employers to raise their pay & conditions, since there won’t be a standing reserve of unemployed worker"

Somebody tagged me on this thinking that it is a statement that education is useless.

Kenyans, how can I help you? Why on earth do you still believe aristocrats and racists say about education?

Let me break this down for you.
standard.co.uk/news/politics/…
First, Cummings is one of the new rich people I've been talking about. Guys like the Nairobi governor who are first generation powerful/rich, who come from poor backgrounds, and grovel to the kids with old money, then come back to their roots whenever they need more ideas.
He's in the center of a scandal. So next you want to put down those of us who fight for real education for everybody, first Wikipedia people. Si watu wa e-learning wamesema no need for teachers since there's internet? Basi tumia hiyo internet and check who you're talking about.

Next up on the ‘holiday’ reading list...Bullshit Jobs by @davidgraeber provisionally defined in the intro as ‘a form of employment that is so completely pointless, unnecessary, or pernicious that even the employee can not justify its existence’ Image
I once had a bullshit job. It came with nice office, great job title and good salary but I wasn’t allowed to do anything. Literally. I spent my days shopping for curtains online (we had a new house) and making lunch appointments. I lasted 6 weeks. It doesn’t appear on my CV!
“We have created societies where much of the population, trapped in useless employment, have come to resent and despise equally those who do the most useful work in society and those who do no work at all”. Important question is... whose interests does this serve? #bullshitjobs
