War time sketch of Vera Lynn at Imphal ...India, by my Dad who was recovering from wounds and Malaria.

Learning today about the death of probably our greatest Dame…Vera Lynn, I was prompted to look at my Dad’s wartime sketches.
He was posted to India in 1941 and served in the Indian Army in the REME corps as an artificer ranked as Sergeant operating in both India and Burma campaigns where he was awarded the Burma Star.
Dads war began in 1939 at London Arsenal in Woolwich as did many new recruits, then posted to one of the many hills overlooking the Sheffield Steelworks taking care of the anti-aircraft batteries protecting that important industry.

The Drunkard of Europe

JASON MICHAEL
IT WAS ONE OF THE WORST DAYS OF MY LIFE. I know for a fact it was the worst day in at least two people’s lives. In the early hours of the morning the phone rang. On the other end of the phone my friend was speaking to me in a stranger’s voice
. Her husband was beside himself with shock and grief, and she was calmly explaining to me what had happened. I say ‘calmly,’ but this wasn’t calm. It was emotionless, a sort of thousand-yard stare of a voice, producing something that sounded for all the world like the person
I knew while she was somewhere else. This voice was absent, it was hollow, and this voice woke me up. Their beautiful baby daughter had died in her sleep. An hour later I was standing by this little angel’s cot, receiving her into my arms from her mother.

Flight Lieutenant Otto #Altmann (later Wing Commander DSO, DFC)

A comparitive rarity - a German flying operationally for #BomberCommand!
(See photo - second right with, apparently, his Hampden aircrew.)
The story of Otto Altmann is interesting and yet frustrating.
He served as a pilot with #106Squadron when they flew Hampdens from @RAFConingsby and flew with distinction for the #RAF, rising to the rank of Wing Commander, but little detail is known of this extraordinary man.
This is an example of a research theme with which we'd be
...grateful for any further detail that could be provided by former comrades, family members or interested members of the public.
We know that Otto Altmann joined #106Sqn in March 1941 as a Flight Lieutenant and became considered as a senior pilot. He participated in the...

When Francis #Fukuyama, in his 1992 book, disclosed the "end of history" #thesis, he became a world celebrity.

The formulation was simple, but devastating for the left: faced with the evidence of the disappearance of the #SovietUnion, he could affirm that #communism had failed..
and that #capitalism emerged victorious as the only system that guaranteed #peace, #freedom & #equality.

However, in 2010 Fukuyama acknowledged that he had not understood the meaning of the disappearance of the Soviet Union and the #European socialist bloc.
Fukuyama had believed in the drunkard #Yeltsin (the face of the gravedigger & #thief who prevailed with blood & fire, supported by the #West, with the coup d'etat in #Moscow in 1993) and in the capacity of liberalism to satisfy human needs and, In addition, in 1992, ...

The Citizenship Amendment Act in #India has received much intl attention and generated heated debate and protests that provoked a police crackdown and rioting, including the recent #DelhiViolence that resulted in over 50 deaths. Why is the #CAA problematic?

A thread…
What is #CAA? It provides a fast track to Indian citizenship for specifically non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan already in India; removes the illegal migrant label for specified groups; and protects them from legal action in regard to citizenship.
The government argues the #CAA’s only purpose is to protect persecuted minorities in neighboring countries, a laudable goal in of itself (and a key reason my org @USCIRF was formed), and has no impact on Indian Muslims.

Step 1: Read translated interview
'After the battle, our company and the Chinese company were ordered to defend the Mawchi road and the Officer-in-Charge was Capt. Thompson of the Bengal Rifles. Jemedar Pan Mya and 16 soldiers were captured fighting the Japanese at Paletwa.'
Step 2: Check out Capt. Thompson
Thompson was not Bengal Rifles, he was 1st Battalion Burma Rifles. Translator or interviewee error? Not to worry. Error found.
