@Merrick963 @TomPilcher6 ^ This. Merrick96 is right.
@Merrick963 @TomPilcher6 The United States, as it exists, is not a viable union. It is headed toward civil war.

We could go our separate ways in peace, like the Czech and Slovak Republics did, or we could stay on the road to mass death and destruction.

Which option really sounds more foolish?
@Merrick963 @TomPilcher6 #CalExit is not a new thing. There's a state with a much different vision of the future it wants than does almost any other state in the union, and let's take a good look at it.

It has 39.24 million people, more people than Canada, and has more land than the country of Japan.

Here's a brief history of the #NationalDivorce hashtag. First used almost a decade ago by obscure accounts, it has in recent years been tweeted by a ragtag lineup that includes #Calexit founder Louis J. Marinelli and QAnon Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

cc: @ZellaQuixote
The first tweet containing #NationalDivorce appears to be a November 2012 tweet from @RTsolideogloria, a now-dormant right-wing account. This was later followed by several tweets in 2013/2014 from left-wing account @StrongAmerican encouraging Texas to secede from the USA.
In 2017, right-wing pundit and Claremont Institute fellow @davereaboi began using the #NationalDivorce hashtag somewhat regularly. His tweets containing it were largely ignored until June 2020, however.

So #SanDiego's @GOP mayor is pushing QAnon conspiracy theories, the party's county chair used to make Nazi videos and his sons call themselves groypers and push "nationalism," and Tom Metzger patrolled the border with David Duke when he lived here.

San Diego CBP is helping to disappear protesters in Portland (and elsewhere), the One America News Network and its Kremlin-curious staff have their HQ here, the #CalExit guy made his home here before moving back to Russia. Peter Navarro shat up the place for decades too
And yet, when I published this, I was told by local reporters that I was overreacting and casting San Diego in a bad light. Kinda feeling better about never really fitting in among the local press corps tbh

The scope of the Russian Disinformation campaign is bigger than you think (THREAD).

It is insanely CLEVER and diabolical.

(1)
In 2016 the Russia influenced the election in 3 ways:
1) Attempted to hack the online voting systems
2) Cyber-attack on DNC
3) Systematic social media disinformation campaign targeted at US citizens to exert political influence and exacerbate social divisions in US culture.

(2)
For number 1 they may have succeeded and in 2/3 they certainly succeeded. For the purpose of this thread i will be detailing with the 3rd point.

Systematic social media disinformation campaign

A couple years later, the most prominent person supporting California independence is still... Peter Thiel.
Strong argument to be made that the #Calexit clowns have done more damage to the idea of secession in American than anyone since Jefferson Davis.

I swear these guys must be performance art, because they couldn’t possibly make the idea of state secession look any worse.

[Thread] 1/ Here's one on Instagram (for a change) and #calexit. For those who remember, the other day thousands of Iran-linked accounts were promoting California's secession from the United States. I did a thread on it. I've also analysed a bunch of Instagram accounts...
2/ I downloaded about 8062 posts from Instagram using the hashtag calexit. These ranged from 2017 (when we know Russian trolls farms were active promoting the hashtag) to April 2020. You can see the spikes over the years. It appears to have been most active in Nov2016 & April20
3/ When ranked by the most liked posts, the top three were in Persian. The two most liked posts were by this guy Yasser Jebraili, who appears to be 'Head of the Strategic Evaluation' (forgive the google translation!). The post is about California's homeless and erm, Corona

[Thread] 1/ Ok this thread is on what looks like hardline pro-Iranian regime Twitter propaganda, targeting California separatism (wtf). Thanks @maasalan for making me aware of it. Please defer to @maasalan for issues about Iranian politics, I'll focus on the Twitter shit. Read on
2/ So 'Iranians' are supporting the hashtag #Calexit - but why, and what actually is Calexit, and why did I put 'Iranians' in quotation marks. Well Cal Exit = a California separatist campaign. It seems (is) stupid, but foreign powers like to provoke division in the domestic
3/ affairs of other countries. We've seen it with Brexit, and also with Calexit. Indeed, in 2016 Russian trolls apparently were promoting the Calexit hashtag, no doubt to provoke polarisation & societal conflict in Russia's adversary. While the Russian trolls tried to resemble

Stop trying to make #Calexit happen. #Calexit isn't going to happen.

cc: @ZellaQuixote
In case you missed it, #Calexit trended in the wee hours, sometime between 1:15 and 1:20 PDT on April 6th, 2020. Traffic mostly doesn't look automated, but that doesn't necessarily make it authentic; for one thing, there are a LOT of recently created accounts. . .
#Calexit has been a perennial favorite of overseas disinfo operations, and today's trend doesn't disappoint. Traffic is in a mix of Farsi and English; the general theme is that Iran is eager to recognize the independence of and work with a post-secession Republic of California.

It would appear that @DrunkAlexJones went a little off the rails last night and attempted to bait retweet bots (among other things.) How'd it work out?

cc: @ZellaQuixote
@DrunkAlexJones @ZellaQuixote Verdict: moderate success. 9 of 11 accounts that retweeted the @DrunkAlexJones tweet in question are automated: a mix of #GiletsJaunes, #Calexit, #HillaryEmail, #Resistance, and #GreenNewDeal retweet bots. All the automated retweets happened within an hour of the original tweet.
@DrunkAlexJones @ZellaQuixote Finally, @DrunkAlexJones drew a like from @_albaiat, the "Official Twitter of The Deputy Politician for Joe Biden candidate President 2020 of United State." This does not appear to be a real job, and Pennsylvania residence does not align with the account's tweet schedule.

Where do #QAnon devotees go to get caught up on the latest #QAnonsense these days? While the Q "drops" still get initially posted on shady sites such as 8chan, qmap(dot)pub is the hip site to visit to see all the Q mythology to date in one place.

cc: @ZellaQuixote
@ZellaQuixote We downloaded recent tweets linking to qmap(dot)pub, yielding 16441 tweets from 6269 accounts in the last 8 days. There are some bots in the mix, but we'll get back to that later, because there's a more interesting anomaly. . .
@ZellaQuixote Nearly a quarter (23.3%, to be precise) of recent tweets linking #QAnon website qmap(dot)pub are in Japanese, despite the site itself being an English-language site about a (mostly) US-centric conspiracy theory.

‼️The Brexit Referendum & the 2016 Trump Campaign are intertwined— the same co-conspirators are involved in both.

Brexit (Leave.eu) was a test run for the Trump 2016 presidential campaign.

This thread will illustrate the big picture. Trump = medium sized fish.
Both campaigns focused on common RW themes: Nationalism, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-Soros, income disparity, etc.—all issues exacerbated by the actions of TOC.

📌Cambridge Analytica is the focal point through which we can see the relationships in play & reveals the elephant in the room: Britain tying its future to an America that is being remade - in a radical and alarming way - by TeamTrump.

The theme of yesterday's secession conference here in Texas: Nullification now, nullification tomorrow, nullification forever. thinkprogress.org/secessionists-…
The conference highlighted how much life nullification still has from the Obama years—and how ready these extreme right circles are to bring it back under some future Democratic administration. Get ready for more "Nullification Now!" rallying cries in the coming years.
(I got to break to the conference that acting AG Mark Whitaker was a supporter of nullification, which was met with oos, ahhs, and gasps of excitement throughout the room.)

Following last night's Thousand Oaks shooting, there's been an uptick in Twitter traffic about "false flags". We downloaded tweets containing #FalseFlag/"false flag" (and filtered out content related to unrelated topics such as Syria).

cc: @ZellaQuixote
Here are some examples of the tweets asserting that the Thousand Oaks mass shooting is a false flag. The #FalseFlag theories vary, but everything from #Calexit to voter fraud to claims that this shooting is a "distraction" from the outcome of the 2018 midterms surfaces.
Here's the retweet network for #FalseFlag/"false flag" (with terms unrelated to the Thousand Oaks shooting filtered out). A number of these accounts, including the largest node (@LizCroken) are #QAnon fans who've crossed our radar before. . .

Meet @Garexit, the official Twitter account of the Gary, Indiana secession campaign. If you live in Gary (or anywhere else) and have never heard of this movement, that's not surprising, as we made it up in early April.
We decided to use @Garexit to test a couple of the social media automation services we've seen used by other bots, and simultaneously gauge the online activity around various secession movements.
We started with paper.li. This service is a search-based news aggregator. We configured it to gather articles based on the search terms "Indiana secession movements" and "Texas secession", and to link the articles on Twitter.

Everything is Bottier in Texas
We've looked into social media activity related to secession movements before, primarily #Calexit (btw, #CalexitIsStillAKremlinConJob). Let's divert our attention to the Lone Star state and check out automated Twitter traffic around #Texit for a change of pace.
Repeated tweets are one distinct sign of automation, and a Twitter search for #Texit doesn't disappoint. Refining the search to "Good morning GregAbbott_TX. We're ready for a vote on #Texit." reveals a pair of accounts (@JohnDuBose6 and @RCC_JDGIV) that tweet this text every day.

Flights to Russia and embassies in Moscow. Petition drives and fake social media accounts galore.

My dive into three years of support out of Russia for American separatists - and the blowback that came with: thinkprogress.org/russia-texas-c…
As a quick run-through: U.S. secessionists' ties in Russia date to at least early 2015, when @texasnatmov sent one of its officers to St. Petersburg to hang with the far-right Rodina crowd, and to stump for Texas secession. thinkprogress.org/russia-texas-c…
(A bot network immediately picked up on @texasnatmov's visit to Russia, and pushed out "Free Texas!" messages by the dozen. Even Pravda got in on the game.)
