Given my love for #travel, thought I'd compile a thread of some of the best #tourism ads I've seen over the years

Am keeping it restricted to #PrintAds, and only those by #tourismboards, whether national, state or city

Hope you enjoy it 🙂🥂 and are inspired to travel
We could warm up with #Australia's 'So Where The Bloody Hell Are You' campaign, which turned a lot of heads thanks to it's choice of wording and, of course, the stunning visuals
Politeness can be over rated, eh @Australia 🖖🏾
As far as accidental tourism ads go, #Banff in #Canada capitalized on a squirrel photobombing a couple's pic and made him their mascot, even creating a Twitter id for the little fella and featuring him in a whole set of ads

Nicely done @banfflakelouise @Canada

#Spain #CanaryIslands #Refugees

From Saturday to Monday morning, 2206 migrants in a total of 58 open wooden boats arrived on the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off West Africa, which belong to Spain. Image
This is how many people from African countries were last registered during the refugee crisis, reported the Europa Press news agency. The Canaries include the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro,
which are also popular with tourists, as well as six other islands. Most of the people who leave their African homeland because of poverty, violence and the consequences of the corona pandemic came to the pier in the port city of Areguineguín in southwest Gran Canaria to register.

🚩WESTERN MED: 4 shipwrecks in 2 weeks! Where is the public outrage?

Besides the boat with ~63 people we reported missing for two weeks now, there have been reports of three other shipwrecks along the #CanaryIslands route, just in the past three days.
elpais.com/espana/2020-08…
One of the three capsized boats reportedly left from #Mauritania and another two left from Western #Sahara. Our condolences to all the victims of European borders and their loved ones.
The militarisation of European borders has produced longer and ever-more dangerous routes, including those across the #Atlantic Ocean. Death at sea will cease when freedom of movement ceases to be a privilege and becomes a right. #BordersKill

++ AlarmPhone alerted to 4 boats off Morocco! ++
Yesterday, 1 small paddle boat with 12 people on board was intercepted to #Morocco. 3 other boats with 63, 32 and 28 people left from the Western Sahara on Saturday, heading toward #CanaryIslands. They still are out at sea!
Spanish air assets are searching for the boats but bad weather makes this a difficult task. The boats face high waves in the waters of the Atlantic. This morning & last night @salvamentogob rescued 2 other boats with 31 & 26 people. We ask for #safepassage for all!
We are still unable to confirm the fate of the 3 boats we were alerted to in the Western Med. @salvamentogob confirmed to us that they rescued a boat with 33 people last night but unfortunately we were unable to confirm this is one of the boats that reached out to us.

Our new Western Mediterranean report is out now 👉alarmphone.org/en/2020/06/06/…. It covers the effects of strict limitations on mobility in #Morocco due to #COVID19 & how the crisis has affected vulnerable groups, incl ~80,000 sub-Saharans in transit, working in the informal sector
The region has continued to see shipwrecks, deportations, raids, arbitrary detention and overcrowding in centres & arrests of activists during the pandemic. However, there have also been successful crossings with 7,266 ppl already having made it to Spain this year. Boza!
The #Canaryislands route remains the most dangerous of all & has seen a 600% increase in arrivals compared to the same period in 2019. Travellers are mostly of Malian, Senegalese, Guinean and Ivorian origin, as well as some Moroccans. Around 20% are women and 12% are children.

Where are they? A relative told us that yesterday at 5am a boat left towards the Canary Islands with 23ppl, 7 women & 3 children. They have been missing since! Authorities in #Morocco & #Spain say they are searching. It's stormy in the region & we hope they will be found soon.
Unfortunately, we still have no news about the 23 ppl en route to the #CanaryIslands. They left from #Boujador in #Morocco approximately 36 hours ago. We fear the worst. After the shipwreck on Tuesday, is this the second disaster at sea this week? #Europe, your #BordersKill
There is still no sign of life of the 23 people who went missing when trying to reach the Canary Islands. They left from #Morocco about 59 hours ago. Spanish and Moroccan authorities confirm ongoing search operations and the movements of a Spanish aircraft show search patterns. Image

In the early part of the first millennium CE, the #IndoEuropean language known as Proto-#Germanic diverged into an East branch (which included #Gothic) and a Northwest branch.

Northwest then split into West and North branches when Proto-#Norse developed in #Scandinavia. Image
Until the 8th century, #Germanic #languages, including Proto-#Norse, were written in Elder Futhark, the earliest #runic #alphabet.

The name #Futhark comes from the initial phonemes in the names of the first six #runes:
ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ᚨ ᚱ ᚲ
F U Þ A R K

By the beginning of the #Viking Age around 800 CE, Proto-#Norse had evolved into Old Norse, and #Scandinavia's writing system transitioned from the 24 #runes of Elder #Futhark to Younger Futhark's 16 runes.

The #Swedish #Sparlösa #Runestone from ~800 CE features both #alphabets. Image
