Big news for America’s student borrowers: @SenSchumer, @PattyMurray, @SenSherrodBrown & I are unveiling a bold new plan to #cancelstudentdebt payments during the coronavirus emergency & pay down a minimum of $10k for all student borrowers. #cancelmydebt warren.senate.gov/newsroom/press…
Last time our economy crashed, this country made a devastating mistake: we turned our backs on students and families to bail out the giant banks. Student loan borrowers – especially students of color – never fully recovered from that economic punch to the gut.
This time around, by cancelling student debt payments for millions, we will fix the mistake that still holds back a generation of people and dragged down our economy, and create a real, grassroots stimulus to help see us through this crisis.

Student loan cancellation has to be part of the next emergency funding package.

@SenWarren & I are calling on Senate & House leadership to prioritize this.
We need bold action now. A plan that will ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the 2008 financial crisis.

Debt cancellation. Across the board.

Immediately, the Secretary of Education must take over all monthly payments during this public health emergency.
Breaking news this morning 📰🚨Senate Democratic leadership are taking the student loan cancellation priority Sen Warren and I have been pushing for to the negotiating table.

Last month, one of @BetsyDeVosED’s top student loan advisors abruptly resigned, called the student loan system “fundamentally broken,” & announced his support for student debt cancellation. @WhipClyburn & I want to know how he came to that conclusion. politico.com/news/2019/11/1…
Dr. Johnson says that “repayment trends suggest much of the [student loan] debt will likely never be repaid,” but @BetsyDeVosED refuses to lift a finger to help our students. If @usedgov is sitting on info confirming Dr. Johnson's conclusions, the public deserves to see it.
It’s true: our student loan system IS fundamentally broken. That’s why @WhipClyburn & I have a bill to cancel student loan debt for 42 million Americans. Our bill will help close the racial wealth gap & end the student debt crisis. #CancelMyDebt

I was delighted to join @WhipClyburn at his alma mater @SCSTATE1896 for a town hall on our bill to cancel student debt for 42 million Americans. #cancelmydebt Image
Black Americans face the worst effects of the student debt crisis. Many still owe more than 100% of their loan balance 12 years college, even with a degree in hand. My #cancelmydebt bill with @WhipClyburn takes meaningful steps to close the racial wealth gap. Image
The student debt crisis will only get worse – especially for students of color – unless Congress steps up to solve it. I’m honored to work side-by-side with @WhipClyburn to tackle this crisis head-on. #cancelmydebt Image

Student loan debt is crushing an entire generation. That’s why Rep. James Clyburn—who has always been a leader on economic justice issues—and I are introducing a truly transformational bill to cancel up to $50,000 in student loan debt for 42 million Americans. #CancelMyDebt
Our bill will cancel student loan debt for more than 95% of Americans who carry it, and wipe out student loan debt entirely for more than 75% of Americans with that debt.
We'll free up an entire generation so that they can buy homes, launch businesses, and start their families. And our bill will also provide an enormous middle-class stimulus and reduce the racial wealth gap.

My #CancelMyDebt story starts when I was 16. I graduated 2nd in my class a year early & wanted to pursue a degree in journalism.

There was just one little hitch. My parents wouldn't help me.
I'd been working part-time throughout high school, but I didn't have enough.

(2) I'd applied to some pretty incredible schools and been accepted at all of them. Marist. Bryant. Even my last choice- The Naval Academy at Annapolis. A few even awarded me scholarships. Marist was my first choice.
But there was one tiny problem.
(3) Even with Marist awarding me a generous partial scholarship, work study, and maxing out my federal loan eligibility, I couldn't figure out how to pay for even the first year. I was still thousands of dollars short and at 16, no one was going to give me a loan.

The thing is, I was careful. I did all those things people say you should do so you don't end up in debt. I worked full time on the overnight shift while going to school during the day #CancelMyDebt
My car is 21 years old. I have no children. When my wedding came up as an unavoidable expense, I bought a $20 white dress from a thrift store, skipped the reception, the guests, everything but the actual exchanging of the vows.
My husband and I took our vacations the least expensive way we could. Driving instead of flying. Tenting instead of renting hotel rooms. We bought the cheapest house we could find on the market.
