💉 Here's Where the Story Ends ~ snoRNAs 💉

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are small bits of RNA which direct gene expression. They are involved in transcription, and translation of proteins which cause cancer. snoRNAs are biomarkers for tumerogenesis. > https://www.nature.com/arti...
N1-methyl-pseudouridine (m1Ψ) is a snoRNA product.

N1-methyl-pseudouridine is also an ingredient in the COVID mRNA 💉.

It's used to insure strong lasting translation of the spike protein in the body. > Image

1/6 @illumina just announced the $200 whole genome 🧬 The most powerful machines in the Novaseq X series can produce 20,000 genomes a year, so how can we make sense of all that data in #cancerresearch? COSMIC has the answers 💡 #IGF

Its a signal getting brighter but 1 among many wins of #CancerResearch that needs unlimited Public support & resources/ facilitation from Govt/Charities pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35660797/ ImageImageImage
It's neither the 1st nor will it be the last spectacular win of cancer research against one of the several hundred forms or subtypes of human cancers

100+ y ago, early-stage Breast/ Thyroid/ Kidney/ Oral/ Stomach & other cancers then considered fatal were cured by surgery alone
80+ y ago, skin cancers, early-stage cervix, oral and larynx cancers were magically cured by Radiotherapy/Radium alone

50+ y ago, cure rates for childhood cancers, Leukemia, Lymphoma skyrocketed with chemotherapy

40+ y ago, incurable germ cell tumors cured by platinum chemo

May 8th = World Ovarian Cancer Day 2022 #WOCD2022

A thread 🧵 on some points I wish to relay as a Medical Oncologist with subspecialty in GYN oncology and based in fair Ireland 🇮🇪
2/8

The most common symptoms of ovarian cancer are the #BEAT symptoms - always get checked out by your GP if you have these or other symptoms that are not resolving

#knowyourbody
3/8

There is no reliable #screening test for ovarian cancer

❌ Pap smears do not diagnose ovarian cancer
❌ Ca125 is not a reliable test
❌ Pelvic/vaginal USS may miss a diagnosis or overdiagnose a normal cyst

Until we have better screening, symptoms are all we have #BEAT

In a recent lung cancer pilot study, we identified and quantified a record number of 13,187 protein groups with our next-generation single-shot proteomics technology HRM.
This was achieved using FAIMS-DIA with highest resolution chromatography and FAIMS Exploris 480. (1/n) Image
The depth of analysis was superior to the one achieved in the Deep Human Proteome Atlas (deep fractionated tissue with multiple MS acquisitions, Wang et al., 2019, Mol Syst Biol). Image
Comprehensively, we could identify 414 oncogenes, 392 transcription factors, 837 plasma membrane proteins (25 GPCR), and 316 kinases covering a dynamic range of 10. In addition, 0.25 Mio peptides (including modifications) were measured in totality.

1/14 🆕 🚨Accelerated article on #breastcancer just out in @nature! #bcsm

We asked:
1️⃣ What drives response to #chemotherapy in #breast #cancer
2️⃣ Can we use #machinelearning to predict response to chemotherapy❓

Link: nature.com/articles/s4158…

A 🧵👇👇👇 @OncoAlert
2/14 We are unable to #predict #response to treatment in clinic…

✅Good response ➡️treatment very effective ➡️better survival
❌Poorer response ➡️treatment less effective ➡️worse survival

Being able to forecast response would be a landmark advance!
3/14 We ran a study in women with #breastcancer @CUH_NHS+@CRUK_CI:
1️⃣who had a #cancer biopsy (which we analysed)
2️⃣received 18 weeks of chemo+/-targeted therapy
3️⃣had surgery (and we measured how much cancer remained)

We associated PRE-therapy profiles↔️POST-therapy response👇

Critics of #TRIPSwaiver for #covid19 #vaccines stress importance of IPR protection for pharma industry and see future #innovation at risk. But the empirical evidence gives few indications of this. This thread explains why & proposes alternative innovation incentives.
Empirical evidence that increased patent protection leads to more innovation justifying its social costs is surprisingly thin: Little support in the literature that higher patent protection increases rate of innovation. Full references of citations: ÖFSE WorkingPaper linked below
Some studies even found statistically significant negative relationship between patent protection & productivity growth. Led to sharp increase in transaction costs&legal disputes -->discourages smaller firms&start-ups -->reduces technological innovation

1/2 Being a #virologist @DKFZ, I just HAVE to retweet this one. Yes, folks, #viruses do cause #cancer also in humans! Check out my #teaching slide in the next tweet! #HPV #HBV #HCV #EBV #HTLV #CancerResearch #infectiousdiseases #virology
@DKFZ 2/2 Merkel cell #carcinoma is a hideous #disease, but luckily very rare (though almost always associated w/ McPyV on the northern hemisphere). Even much, much more common #cancers are associated with #virus #infections (or #bacteria like H.pylori)! #HPV #HBV #HCV #EBV #HTLV Image
3/2 😅 Sorry, let me add one more remark: of course not ALL the shown #cancer cases are associated with #infections, but a significant fraction of the indicated cancer types are (e.g. #HPV in 99% of #CervicalCancer, aprx. 75% #HBV or #HCV in #livercancer!)
