While there is no set number of years, generally, 5 - 7 years in a software engineer role is what most engineering managers have before they take on the management path.

However, it's so important that it must be done by those who are building the thing (aka developers).

If you're a QA and looking to reinvent yourself, here are a few roles that might be suitable as they share some of the skills & characteristics of a QA.
- Front-end Developer
- Technical Program Manager
- Site Reliability Engineer
- DevOps Engineer
