Is it possible to live #carfree in Edmonton's suburbs with 4 kids?

I think it is, and after selling our vehicle yesterday, today is day 1 of our new life.

I'm going to 🧵 our journey here.

All 4 fit in our cargo trike, but I'm going to add a trailer for more space/cargo.

Timing for this is ideal bc we got an offer we couldn't refuse for our van, which gives us the $ to create the optimum set up for #carfree life.

Plus, we will save $ not having a car (I'm cheap). CAA's calculator estimates $12k a year.

2/ Image
I've been thinking about this for a couple years, but having our 4th & realizing we don't need the van for him, plus insurance rising $900 this year despite having a clean record & being -15 on the grid, plus rising fuel costs told me this was the time.

1/ Rising gas prices: The perfect opportunity for @MetrobusTransit to have @Joanne_NL @SeamusORegan coordinate with @TownofCBS @townofparadise @CityofStJohns @Mount_Pearl to get #parknride and #publictransit across the Metro region. #nltraffic #nlpoli #design709 ImageImage
2/ In all reality, a dependable public transit system could alleviate traffic in @TownofCBS, reduce car dependency, actually help with GHG reduction, and save constituents money. @DarrinBent @ShelleyMoores79 @AndreaGosse @mjhardynl @JoshBarrettCBS thoughts? Image
/3 The fact that we have no wide urban transit system is abhorrent. We dedicate nearly all transportation to personal vehicles, leaving a large chunk of the population venerable to small fluctuations in #gasprices. Also with no alternative option, it's own a car or poverty.

1/ The @CityofStJohns tells me I am to engage in vehiclular cycling. Cool: I got an #ebike and I ride in traffic. Cool: I've had cars zoom passed me at lethal velocities because there is no real bike infrastructure. But... How do I trigger traffic lights?
2/ I've been patiently waiting on the vehicle magnetic sensor with nothing happening and cars behind me. Sorry #nltraffic cars but I literally cannot trigger the light.

Why don't people cycle? It's not the rain eh @kerriclaireneil. It's not the wind eh @BicycleNL. It's the cars
3/ The sooner we can convert wasted on street parking (aside from downtown) and convert those to at a MINIMUM painted enforced bike gutters the better.

Pedestrians and cyclists don't match easily. For a casual ride sure but not for commuting.

THREAD: How do people in the UK feel about #ClimateChange, & how willing are they to support climate policies or make lifestyle changes?

Our new wave 1 survey results reveal perceptions around:
🥩 Food
✈️ Travel & transport
🌡️ Heating
🛒 Consumption

Here are 5 key takeaways: 1/ A man looks a a flooded urban road with safety signage.
Climate concern remains high.

39% of people were very or extremely worried about climate change, up from 25% four years ago. Only 7% describe themselves as 'not at all worried'. 2/
Most people support efforts to reduce air travel & overall material consumption but express less support for efforts to reduce meat consumption: Almost half think that we should definitely reduce the amount of energy we use, but only 24% feel the same way about meat. 3/

2017: I formally asked NorwichCC to take part in World Car-Free Day: they liked the idea, but didn't commit.
2019: 1st #NorwichCarFreeDay took place (22/09) thanks to a @Transcendental1 motion
2020: #NorfolkCarFreeDay is born, supported by @NorfolkCC & all district councils!...
...personally, I'm dead chuffed. Yeah it's taken a lot of emails, meetings & conversations - and yes a LOT more ambition is needed - but it feels like the #carfree movement is finally starting to take root in our region...
...perhaps even more excitingly, we've persuaded NorfolkCC to scrap their road closure charges for community events, meaning amazing schemes like @playingout should have a chance to thrive here too. Big thanks to supportive Cllrs, officers & the @CarFreeNorwich team. \m/

A few weeks ago I lost my card holder that had my @PRESTOcard, @BikeShareTO, and @YMCA_Canada passes...

Storytime!
(thread)
So, yeah, one night while I was taking #BikeBrampton home, I thought I heard and ran over something. It wasn't obvious at the time what that was, so I ignored it. I realized the next morning that it must have been my cardholder because it was missing.
I checked in with lost and found with the #Brampton @GOtransit to see if anyone had turned it in. Nobody had. I decided that I wasn't going to take the chance of someone using the cards. I cancelled all of the cards that were in the holder and ordered new ones.
