The IRS will do your taxes for you (if that's what you prefer): After years of expensively purchased delay, Turbotax and its fellow tax-profiteers are losing the fight to make you pay them to tell the government what it already knows.

Auditors lubricate capitalism, keeping finance's gears smoothly a-whirl, so investors can move money in and out of companies without poring over their books or walking their facilities. Without auditors, capitalism's gears would grind to dust:

Unfortunately for capitalism, auditing is irredeemably broken. The Big Four auditors (#PWC, #EY, #Deloitte and #KPMG) have merged to monopoly, becoming #TooBigToFail and #TooBigToJail.

Leaks like the #PandoraPapers and collapses like #Carillion have shone a spotlight on the role of "the professions" in enabling international finance crimes, which include both money-laundering and the underlying (ghastly, violent) crimes that produce the funds for laundering. 1/ A club-wielding thug whose off-hand is making a 'give me' ge

For example, the Sacklers knowingly, deliberately created the opioid epidemic that killed more than 800,000 Americans, and used America's most respectable, highest-price bankruptcy lawyers to let them keep billions and deny justice to their victims.

10 years ago today, I was in court against #Carillion & they admitted that:
1. they blacklisted me
2. their managers provided the information on my files
3. the reason was for my union activities
4. the reason was for my H&S activities
5. that the #blacklist caused me a detriment
My legal team were David Renton @dkrenton & @owens_declan. Later joined by @JohnHendyQC.
My #blacklisting test case against #Carillion & UK gov went to the European Court of Human Rights.
Lawyers who get politics, as well as the law, are hide to find. I can’t thank them enough ✊
Over the years, #blacklisted workers secured new legislation, a High Court trial, new European regs, new public procurement protocols, a select committee investigation into #blacklisting & exposing the role of #spycops. Proud to have stood alongside these working class heroes.

In other #procurement news, @BorisJohnson revealed that he views the £250bn of government procurement as a cash cow to fund his other policy promises through "savings" 💰

Here's why we @reformthinktank think this is awful procurement policy....

news.sky.com/story/the-full…
First, procurement is already strained by factors including poor supplier-purchaser relationships and bad contracting 📜

(see @Ameyplc's issue with Birmingham city council )
Second, with the renationalisation of some services going ahead, procurement spend will be higher as both transition costs and direct spend will increase (something I've written about before with @G4S and #probation)

Thread/ So I promised to go through what I thought the Government could do to prevent this in the future. This gets a bit wonkish, but bear with me.
1/ I’m writing as someone who has been working with procurement and public spending data for 15 years. I’ll start by showing you why we’re failing to prevent events like #Carillion, I'll finish with some ideas for improvements.
2/ The biggest problem that we face is that more and more money is going to fewer and fewer suppliers. In Local Government, 20 companies earn more than the 75,000 small businesses that supply the sector.

Thread: How bad is #Carillion and why is it so hard to unpick? Having spent the best part of 15 yrs looking at public procurement data, this is my take on the situation.
1/ At @open_opps we've identified that 208 public bodies had some form of contract with #Carillion in the last 5 years. The total spend with #Carillion in the published spend reports was nearly £1bn in 2016, but this shrank in 2017.
2/ We don't have complete data for 2017, but by our estimates #Carillion's public sector revenues fell by about 25%
