Absolutely incredible footage of #LoyaltonFire #pyrovortex ("Fire Tornado") earlier today. Pretty sure this validates @NWSReno's Tornado Warning--which is, I believe, the first ever issued by @NWS specifically for a wildfire-generated pyroconvective event. #CAwx #CAfire #NVwx
To be clear: this is *not* first documented instance of a large-scale fire vortex. Devastating #CarrFire in 2018 near Redding, CA produced one of the strongest such events in recent memory, outside of a couple of previous events during Australian firestorms. (1/3) #CAwx #CAfire
Such events are not a new phenomenon--they have probably occurred during particularly intense wildfires under the right atmospheric conditions since...well, time immemorial. But I suspect these recent events have been more noticeable for two key reasons: (2/3) #CAfire

Thread inspired by yesterday's truly spectacular and widely discussed Great Plains-style supercell in California's Sacramento Valley. #CAwx #Redding #ShastaCounty (1/n)
Thunderstorms in general are much less common along the West Coast of North America than across nearly all other parts of the continent. Some parts of coastal California see one (or even fewer!) thunderstorms in a typical year. #CAwx (2/n)
Cumulonimbus clouds associated w/t-storms require strong upward vertical motion in order to form. Sometimes, this can be generated by boundary, like a cold front; other times, mere heating of humid lower atm can be sufficient for air to spontaneously rise, cool, &condense.(3/n)

THREAD: I've seen a lot of "How to Help" posts & I am so grateful for the people who want to help. Having been evacuated from my home for 18 days during the #CarrFire and now living in a community recovering from a natural disaster, I have a few additions. 1/
There are agencies in Butte County doing the best they can but simply don't have the resources to serve the populations that have been displaced. For example, schools are closed until Dec 2. The County library system sure could use an infusion of cash. buttecounty.net/Portals/28/Don… 2/
Libraries will be places of refuge from the smoke but they will also be where people can make copies, access the internet, pick up forms, read books to their kids. 3/

Our hearts are w/our neighbors suffering because of the #CampFire in Butte County right now. Having been evacuated for 18 days from our home during the #CarrFire, I hope this thread on what we learned might be helpful in the days and weeks ahead. 1/
It may be days or weeks before you learn the fate of your property or are able to return. If you are insured, don't wait to contact your insurance company and establish a claim. This is for two reasons: 2/
First, your policy likely provides coverage for the duration of the evacuation (and sometimes beyond as was our case b/c of loss of use of our home). Some insurance policies will expense a set amount of $$ per day. Others want receipts. Some will front you cash. 3/

2/ @newrepublic article links to this one from @modbee from July 20, 2018 which reported on #ZinkeIsTheWorst™️'s visit to Don Pedro dam with @RepMcClintock (CA-04) and @RepJeffDenham (CA-10) modbee.com/news/article21…
3/ At this outdoor photo-op, @RepJeffDenham said "Congress is looking at one agency, one decision," and "called the state’s water conservation proposal a 'disastrous plan to flush water from valley rivers to the ocean,' foreshadowing twitterfingers-in-chief Aug 5th tweet.

1/ Right now, there are more than 100 wildfires burning across 13 states. The federal government wants to fly in firefighters from Australia and New Zealand. Communities are going up in flames. People are being displaced from their homes.

This is the new normal.
2/ In California, the #CarrFire is still burning near Redding. As of Aug. 2, it has consumed more than 1,000 homes and killed six people. revealnews.org/blog/redding-c…
3/ Cal Fire has reported that the Carr Fire was started by “mechanical failure of vehicle,” an example of a human-caused wildfire. A dozen of the destructive blazes in Northern California’s fire siege last October were attributed to power lines.

For the religious nuts today on Twitter promoting the theory that God is punishing California for their "lifestyle" choices with the #CarrFire , I have two things to say to you:

1: Redding is a Republican stronghold, with 20% more GOP voters than Dems
2: You're a garbage person
Many, many people in response to this tweet have claimed that they never see these kinds of messages. Okey dokey. Here ya'go.

Hey, folks. If you'd like to help spread love and not hate for the survivors of the #CarrFire , the @sacbee_news hase some suggestions.
