Nothing about where we find ourselves as a country is surprising to me because of this one document...

Lessons from the Powell Memo:

1. The understanding and willingness to apply unlimited financial resources to reaching their goal

2. The understanding of taking a long term approach

3. The weight and power to persuade that he places on public speaking: propagandizing.
4. Control the curriculum and conversations on college campuses

5. Coordinated effort on the national and local levels

6. Coordinated effort to influence public perception through media

7. Influence gained through academic research and writing

Products and services are not businesses

And “technical” skills is NOT solely in the domain of programmers

It’s the lack of business know how that accounts for the vast majority of org leaders failing to build for success

1. ALL WHITENESS, IN THE U.S., IS RACIST BY DEFAULT BECAUSE OF HOW YOU’VE TRAINED TO EXPERIENCE THE WORLD

WHITE WOMEN LITERALLY BREED WHITE SUPREMACY

Of course Britain has a racism problem. There's no flaming pitchforks yet, but there's plenty of attacks on foreigners, right from the top.
"oh, but Britain is so much better than America, we don't have the KKK". We've got the BNP, we've got racists in government who extended the red carpet to Trump.
"but we never had Jim Crow laws, and we abolished slavery so early" and yet somehow life prospects still depend on skin colour.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

I wanted to take time today to address an issue related to how Black women continue to be targeted, with increasing intensity, online & how tech & its leaders facilitate it

Also, w/o context, ppl who speak out are being attacked

THREAD 1/

I can admit that I have, until recently, spent a great deal of time, within the safety of the cocoon I created for myself as a Black womAn from GA in the U.S.

I've always known, even as a child, that my well-being was directly tied to white supremacy and racism... 2/
what I wasn't aware of until recently, was how intimately connected my well-being and that of Black women was now being impacted by the decisions of tech leaders

It took this conversation with @digitalsista on the @causeascenePod, to open my eyes 3/

There’s one thing that I can say about Twitter, there’s ALWAYS an opportunity for me to learn and to be challenged

I continue to grapple with the fact that ppl are complex and how to develop strategy that clearly defines where to draw my line

Here’s an example 1/

#causeascene
.@shaunking retweeted @Amy_Siskind, a white woman who caused harm Black women this year & has yet to face any impactful [that I’m aware of] consequences for her actions & I’m reminded of the current #GDIStrike & the harm @girldevelopit has caused in much the same way 2/
Seeing this, I found myself wondering if this is a one off

Is “the work” more important than the messenger

Can we really detach the “movement” from the “mover”

And, I keep coming back to NO 3/

Disappointed that our local community has to lose a vital resource, but an organization that responds to claims of racism and discrimination by telling it's dissenting workforce to "STFU or get out" doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. #gdistrike #causeascene

The GDI constituency (not HQ) has been putting their chapters on hiatus as a move to both distance themselves from HQ, and to get HQ to respond with action to repair the damage it has caused. #gdistrike #causeascene 1/

We are writing you with heavy hearts to let you know we are closing the Dayton Chapter of Girl Develop It. This means that no new events or classes will be organized under the GDI Dayton name by the current leadership.
Recent events have transpired that have broken our trust as local leaders with the Girl Develop It national leadership team. We no longer feel that national leadership (@girldevelopit) is truly committed to the values of this organization.
Former GDI Program Director Shanise Barona, a black woman, recently spoke on the podcast #causeascene about discrimination and microaggressions that she experienced from members of the HQ team. You can listen to the full podcast episode at hashtagcauseascene.com/shanise-barona
