I love it when people insist that they shouldn't be called "white" in the context of explaining why a remark was racist, and that they're annoyed that a woman of color expressed anger in public. Gotta love it.

--angry woman of color
"sorry you were offended" also featured in the non-apology apology, but at least this... "human being named Kelly", as he prefers I refer to him, will refrain from making that one particular racist and sexist remark in the future.
I am so fucking done with being polite to people. #CauseAScene

🧵 I keep a list of things I learnt this year, and put together a quick thread of the things I learned.

In August, @polotek had a thread about burnout for managers, and how the responsibilities are changing:

...just a few weeks ago, @brosandprose wrote about the training she wishes she'd received when starting to be a manager:
@polotek @brosandprose .@lethain's blog post in October looked at growing careers over decades (also: his book is stellar) lethain.com/the-forty-year…

@mattklein123's on different types of senior engineers (breadth vs depth, self growth, etc) was exquisite :chefkiss:

[ed: started in a couple min late, because chronic fatigue...]

Inclusion is neither about equality nor is it about setting quotas.

And racism is about racial prejudice *and* social/institutional power (thus why "reverse racism" isn't a thing). #WSC2019Conf
"Racism is a system of oppression based on race." --@KimCrayton1

If you're not actively anti-racist, then you are complicit in white supremacy. #wsc2019conf
We often don't talk enough about the _system_ that creates inequality. White supremacy is an ideology, and racism promotes white supremacy. People are racist if they benefit from systems of white supremacy, even if they are unwitting. #wsc2019conf

Of course Britain has a racism problem. There's no flaming pitchforks yet, but there's plenty of attacks on foreigners, right from the top.
"oh, but Britain is so much better than America, we don't have the KKK". We've got the BNP, we've got racists in government who extended the red carpet to Trump.
"but we never had Jim Crow laws, and we abolished slavery so early" and yet somehow life prospects still depend on skin colour.

Disappointed that our local community has to lose a vital resource, but an organization that responds to claims of racism and discrimination by telling it's dissenting workforce to "STFU or get out" doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. #gdistrike #causeascene
For context, read the open letter to the board of @girldevelopit. #gdistrike an-open-letter-to-gdi-board.com
I recognize that many folks are still in the dark about what's going on in the @girldevelopit realm. To help, we've updated the open letter website (200 signatures strong) with a timeline that spans 4 months of interactions and discussions: an-open-letter-to-gdi-board.com/timeline/ #gdiStrike

The GDI constituency (not HQ) has been putting their chapters on hiatus as a move to both distance themselves from HQ, and to get HQ to respond with action to repair the damage it has caused. #gdistrike #causeascene 1/
It didn't quite work out as they wanted, given the letter today from Leanne. 2/ #gdistrike
HQ sent another missive, attached to @amlyhamm tweet above, which essentially says "FUCK YOU" to the very vocal constituency, not just chapter leaders, but members, teachers, mentors, and sponsors 3/ #gdistrike

We are writing you with heavy hearts to let you know we are closing the Dayton Chapter of Girl Develop It. This means that no new events or classes will be organized under the GDI Dayton name by the current leadership.
Recent events have transpired that have broken our trust as local leaders with the Girl Develop It national leadership team. We no longer feel that national leadership (@girldevelopit) is truly committed to the values of this organization.
Former GDI Program Director Shanise Barona, a black woman, recently spoke on the podcast #causeascene about discrimination and microaggressions that she experienced from members of the HQ team. You can listen to the full podcast episode at hashtagcauseascene.com/shanise-barona

As some of you following know, I've led this thing on Tuesday nights called "Toast & Tech" for about 3 years, nominally under the organization at .@GDImpls , the Minneapolis chapter of .@girldevelopit 1/
I have left that organization, but I want to leave behind something for those involved in T&T, and for those looking to make a space for learning that it inclusive 2/
The Tenants of Toast and Tech:
- make EVERYONE welcome, enthusiastically
- make ALL questions welcome, enthusiastically
- everyone is learning, everyone is teaching
- there is no single path, there are as many paths as people attending, as many paths as needed

To the @gdiphilly community: here's a thread on my perspective on current events.
You may be aware of what’s been happening in the GDI national community currently – if not, please check out the #causeascene podcast (player.fm/series/causeas…) featuring @shanisebarona.
