Now Out in Paperback! “#China Goes to #Sea: #Maritime Transformation in Comparative Historical Perspective”

amazon.com/China-Goes-Sea…

@NavalWarCollege @ChinaMaritime is proud to publish this new version w/ @NavalInstitute @USNIBooks!

Come for the #maps, stay for the #history...
Honored to have #JonathanSpence’s endorsement:

“The maritime #history of #China has long been a neglected field..China Goes to Sea bring[s] that knowledge-gap to an end..will be an indispensable companion to those readers seeking to understand where China’s navy may be heading.”
As European #naval powers & even the @USNavy struggle with ship numbers, #China has gone to #sea.

Represents the reversal of a great historical trend that began 600 years ago, when China withdrew from the seas & European naval expansion spread Western influence around the globe.

Having spent quite a bit of time recently reviewing #ManchesterArenaInquiry transcripts, apart from it having a less than beneficial effect on my blood pressure 😠its also reduced my time in these here parts
So based on some @mcrinquiry evidence on #CCTV heres a thread ⬇️1/x
Back in 2011, in advance of National CCTV Improvement Week, I developed a range of freely available documents to help Operators to assess and improve their #CCTV systems ahead of the 2012 Olympics and Jubilee celebrations
Based on feedback, the next stage was ... 2/x
... Developing the #TRUSTEDCCTV Operational Standards, which were released in 2013
I mention this because the repeated reference to #CCTV issues & failures mentioned in @mcrinquiry were readily addressable years ago, but only now are they properly ‘under the spotlight’ ... 3/x

In 2005, I set up a business selling CDs, namely mixtape CDs after graduating from Uni.

In 2006, my home was raided & my business was stopped. They said the CDs I was selling were in breach of copyright.
It was a complete shock as the exact same CDs I was selling were prevalent on most high streets and supermarkets. They were selling in their thousands in places such as #Tesco & #HMV. And #Woolworths were the actual UK Distributor of these CDs.

CCTV: @SecPompeo Is Turning Himself into a Common Enemy for Mankind
#CCP's mouthpiece #CCTV says on Apr 27, "Pompeo, a 'political #virus" spreader, is turning himself into a common enemy for mankind. Since the outbreak of the #pandemic, as the chief diplomat, Pompeo has done...
...nothing to prevent or control the #virus but has screamed loudest to smear #China. He has shown zero professional ethics or responsibilities. Instead, he constantly spreads the political virus, tramples on the bottom line of humankind's morality, and has reduced himself to..
..an obstacle for disease control, and an accomplice for the spreading of the virus..."

Italian #DPA lock down the risky #surveillance law that aim to have (biometric_identification+cctv+smart_image_analisys) to check public employees punch-in and punch-out.
This time DPA analyze implementing decree.
In october 2018 the DPA did the same on the draft of the main law Image
The law is already in force (D.Lgs 56/2019) but it lacks of application rules.

The DPA is highlighting and pointing out all the issues related to the law itself ant to the application rules, that are conflicting with the #GDPR main #principles.
Main issues are:

1) terms and #definitions don't match with GDPR definitions. they have to be lined up
2) principles of #Necessity & #Proportionality are completely unattended
3) the new biometric gates can't be #mandatory
4) #alternative gates should be available if needed

I’ve been quoted saying Limerick’s #cctv scheme uses tech akin to regimes like China. I don’t make comparison lightly - seems alarmist but is literally true.

Via @FredPLogue I see alarming prospect that deep learning & AI envisaged. This slide from a @LimerickCouncil update.
Remember: this deep learning and AI would be overlayed on a network of cameras that count footfall, keep a record of the reg of every car passing (24hrs/day), can recognise faces and patterns.
These technologies only make sense (or value for money) if you have software (and algorithms) that can process the vast amounts of data collected. And use the results to what? Create reports? Alerts?
