My PhD research is on whether the laws, rules and norms (institutions) of local government in Canada are biased against renters and how that bias affects their political participation. #cdnmuni #academictwitter
Today, I'm launching a web site for my project: greatsuppression.ca.

There's a huge turnout gap between homeowners and renters. The conventional explanation is that this is a positive effect on homeowners, who are motivated to protect the value of their property.
This “homevoter” hypothesis was developed by William Fischel. I think it explains some but not all of why there’s such a large housing tenure gap.

Yes, adequate broadband access is a health, safety + economic issue for rural communities – but Canada’s economy needs those communities connected too. This needs to happen now. So too, we all need a strong agricultural sector. A flourishing tourism sector, and it goes on. 2/4
So too, we need their innovation. In my role I get to work with and learn from leaders from rural communities across Canada. I see first hand the ingenuity and hard work. When I think of rural Canada, I think first of massive opportunity – not need. 3/4
