For context, the CECRA rent relief program launches today. Landlords can apply to get 50% of rent paid by the government with only 25% paid by small businesses hit by the pandemic. 75% total. This is a HUGE deal. It could save thousands of small businesses. But it probably won't.
The issue is that it's the landlord's choice. So, why wouldn't a landlord take 75% if their tenant is struggling so much they can't pay the rent? I mean, who are they going to rent to in this economy, amiright? Why would they evict? Great questions! Let's discuss. 3/11
Questions the media should be asking tomorrow as the #CECRA rent relief program is launched: of the Feds: how many landlords do they expect to sign up? What would be considered success, and why? Given over 600K signed up for the CEBA loan, are you hoping for numbers like that?1/2
Are you interested in how many landlords of qualifying businesses are not signing up? Are you tracking that? How, and if not why not? Of the provinces: if you're not banning evictions for legal reasons, what, specifically are those legal reasons? Can they not be overcome? 2/2

IMPORTANT SURVEY ALERT. There is big trouble for Canada's rent relief program. In our survey, only 19% say their landlord is likely to sign up for it. The provinces need to declare a moratorium on commercial evictions to save #CECRA. #SaveSmallBusiness 
This landlord response is a tragedy, since small businesses are saying the rent subsidy is BY FAR the most important program that has been rolled out to date. 67% said #CECRA was most important, vs. 24% for the #CEBA loan and only 9% for the #CEWS wage subsidy.
A #CECRA rent subsidy that work would literally save our local communities. 54% of small business owners say it would save them from permanent closure. 43% say it would make a big difference. Only 3% (!) say they sure to survive either way.
Federal and Provincial governments: can you please clarify that you DID NOT issue a moratorium on evictions in your announcements on rent yesterday? People believe you did, and this is very dangerous. Must fix ASAP. @CFIB @loveretail @mary_ng @fordnation @Bill_Morneau #CECRA
The #CECRA approach calls for agreements between landlords and tenants to prevent evictions FOR TENANTS WITH CECRA AGREEMENTS ONLY. Nothing whatsoever for anyone else. Tenants are very confused and think they have protection that they do not.
Alternatively, you could issue a blanket moratorium on commercial evictions, as the UK did on March 24th and Australia did on March 29th to protect their small community businesses, and then no clarification would be necessary. This would be even better.
