UPDATE: The Presidential proclamation barring certain non-citizens from seeking #asylum after crossing the Southern border is out. How will they limit it to the #MigrantCaravan? How much more illegal can this thing get?

I haven't even read this, so let's get through ittogether
(This thread is going to be a sequel to yesterday's on the "final interim rule" rushed into effect in anticipation of this proclamation, so you might want to read that one first.)

These #s appear to be the entire justification for the proclamation, and they badly need context. They may sound scary if you're new to the issue, but check out the overall historical picture & tell me this is a natl. emergency worthy of suspending a 4,000 year-old legal right

Our foreign affairs must be strategic.

#CentralAmerica is a priority because of immigration. Illegal migrants cost us billions.

Meanwhile, all focus must be on containing the Communist #China threat. Where that involves alliances w/ poor nations, aid must be rendered.
The plan for #CentralAmerica is being retooled by WH’s John Kelly & DHS. (reut.rs/2JVEIzy)

I believe a further step is needed w/ a stabilization force, built with a coalition of Latin American nations.

Meanwhile, let’s beef up our border (fence/wall/tech solutions).
But the #CentralAmerica plan is medium to long term. What about right now?

First, let’s stop with the Nazi talk. It’s factually wrong, morally repugnant & does nothing to solve the problem.

Next, Congress needs to get off their butts & send Trump an #ImmigrationReform bill.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON IS WILLING TO STAND BY AND LET THIS HAPPEN?

I just spent more time than was good for my soul getting to know some of them, and I'm ready to report back. Positions and responses below; please deploy as necessary & enjoy your #FathersDay

#KeepFamiliesTogether
1/ "THEIR PARENTS BROKE THE LAW"

A) Like most federal statutes, illegal entry has *never* been criminally enforced en masse
B) Also happening to lawful asylum seekers
C) So did Paul Manafort. For doing far worse *while out on bail*
D) You are a sociopath
2/ "WE DON'T LET OTHER KINDS OF LAWBREAKERS STAY WITH THEIR CHILDREN"

A) Our carceral state imprisons everyone as the unisized solution to everything from drug addiction to homicide.
B) That's not a *good* thing
C) There are alternatives to detention
D) You are a sociopath

The horrific #Goodlatte #immigration bill soon up for debate isn't something to be "compromised" with. It's a harsh, intentional, irrevocable shift Trumpward.

Shred it.

Burn the ashes.

Scatter them upon the Antarctic plains.

Here are just a few of many reasons.
(1) CRIMINALIZATION of unlawful presence in the United States: White supremacy writ into law. For past 228 years, simply *being in U.S.* w/o permission was a civil offense w/no consequence other than deportation.
(NB: This was quickly rejected in 2005, but much more likely now)
(2) ONE HUNDRED THIRTY BILLION UNITED STATES TAXPAYER DOLLARS to fully militarize the Mexican border.

Even @Heritage, which otherwise mostly likes the bill, balked at this as "hard to justify." You don't say.

Today I prepared a beautiful 6-year-old girl in a pink hat for an #asylum interview.

ME: Do you want to go back to El Salvador?

CLIENT [eyes wide]: No!

ME: Why not?

CLIENT [looking down at table]: Because of the bad people.

She'll be deported before her 10th birthday.
That tweet above is pretty much verbatim what she'll be saying on Monday; her father will provide the rest. He'll tell the interviewer about the threats of kidnapping & murder, and what gangs do to children of people they extort if they can't escape. She will not receive asylum.
The case will be referred back to an immigration judge, who will find that she & her family have not suffered persecution based on any grounds that the law can recognize. By the time of her hearing, AG Sessions will have personally removed any doubt of the law around this point.
