Last night, I came across a nugget of history that will hopefully make everyone smile on this stressful today.

El Salvador, like so many places, has a rich indigenous history. Panchimalco, an indigenous community south of the capital, was known for a curious custom...
In the early 1900s, nativos here believed that the eleventh day following the start of a full moon was the best day to make healthy, strong babies. (Any day before this day would produce "cowardly men")
So each day, on this special day, at around 9 o'clock at night, indigenous leaders walked through the village with a drum, proudly shouting:

Love this story! Don Lobo Vasquez is a shoemaker from Guatemala. He & his wife just lost their daughter to kidney failure. The family’s been struggling to make ends meet due to the pandemic, so Don Lobo competed in a dance contest to win $50. His video went viral...
Don Lobo’s passion is dancing. He met his wife, Magali, on the dance floor when they were 14. After their daughter died months ago, they put dancing aside. Then they heard of the contest. “Our daughter was cheering him on,” said Magali. “He was her life, her heart.”
People ask Don Lobo:

“When will you stop dancing? “

“Until God takes me,” he says. “When I’m old, and I have to use cane, the cane will help me. Even if I’m only able to dance with one hand, I’ll dance.”

Thread on #AmericanDirt fr a reader/ journalist who's scurried different parts of th migrant trail for 30 years. Where you see "profound achievement" the me who 1rst saw Salvadoran refugees bombed in the 80s & 90s sees profound ignorance & shallow opportunism. (pic I took in 91)
Where you find #AmericanDirt "thrilling and devastating," the part of me pursued by death squads on both sides of the border sees a cartoon, a simplistic, silly cartoon. lat.ms/2qNPQa0
Where many reviewers find #AmericanDirt "heart-pounding, page-turning" the part of me that's gone to gang hideouts in areas overrun with tanks and mass graves I find the book an insufferable, inaccurate & stereotypical bore. bit.ly/24IZ7x6
