No status change in #Chandrayaan2 mission in last 24 hours. No signals reported from the #VikramLander, orbit of #Chandrayaan2 remains stable. No new official reports from #ISRO, speculation in the Indian media as to the cause of the landing anomaly continues.
#NASA's #DSN appears to have stopped active transmission of commands to #VikramLander to stimulate a response. DSN NOW website appears to show stations tasked to #VikramLander but emissions have not been observed.
#Chandrayaan2 orbiter continues to emit strong S-band radio signals. I found an error in my earlier period timings for the orbiter and now my data nicely matches that of @df2mz. It’s safe to say rumours of the orbiter lowering its orbit are not true. ImageImage

So despite the successful deployment of the Chandrayaan 2 Orbiter, there are still a few people going- “Why are we spending money on space research when we have so many problems back home?” Well, if you want to find out why, keep reading this thread (1/9) #Chandrayan2
For one, India spends less than 0.07% of its total GDP on Space Exploration. I mean we spend 7 times as much on Fertilizer Subsidy. Also, it’s not like all this money goes into some sort of a black hole never to see the light of day again. (2/9)
ISRO, through its commercial arm Antrix, made close to a Billion dollars in revenues over the last 3 years. And the expenditure is trivial compared to the overwhelming benefits that accrue from pushing the frontiers of science. (3/9)

#ProudOfISRO ISRO can take risks, learn from failures and script success stories. Great institution. Our risk-averse corporate sectors who invest in bonds instead of capex need to learn from ISRO.
"India had to develop the lander indigenously after Russia, which was to build the lander under the original plan, backed out. Given the mass of the lander, the propulsion system on-board was required to produce thrust of around 3.2 to 4 Kilonewton. ++
++To make such an engine, ISRO would have had to go back to the drawing board — a move that could have delayed the mission.
ISRO decided to use the existing technology instead."

While India's #Chandrayan2 Vikram lander is preparing for touchdown, China's Chang'e-4 lander & Yutu-2 rover powered down at 19:50 & 20:12 UTC respectively yesterday, ending mission Day 9 on the lunar far side. New Von Kármán crater horizon image released. mp.weixin.qq.com/s/kbLjpGKVKoWz… Image
Yutu-2's total drive distance since deployment in January is 284.661 metres, meaning 13.661 m was covered across lunar day 9, which included multiple points at which science instruments were used. Nice image of rover regolith tracks released below. Image
No update on the 'unusually coloured substance' found during day 8 with this update. Hopefully more images from Yutu-2 will be released before the start of Day 10 (~early October 5). New surface pic below. Image

The couple travelled more than 1100 KM's to reach #Sriharikota from their village near #Nagpur border to be a part of @isro #Chandrayan2 launch

The couple travelled for more than 20 hours & reached #Sriharikota on 15th July, but the launch was called off in the last minute
