⚠️The OMB now requires political appointees—instead of high-ranking career officials—to sign off on every action to apportion (i.e., spend or stop) funds that Congress has appropriated under its *exclusive* constitutional power to do so. politico.com/news/2020/08/1…
With the diverse Power of the Purse Coalition, we oppose the White House’s latest effort to abuse the budgeting process & push congressionally appropriated funds toward executive branch policy priorities. @demandprogress @FreedomWorks @NTU @POGOBlog @RSI pogo.org/press/release/…
The power of the purse belongs to Congress; the executive branch can spend public funds *only as Congress directs*.

The founders purposely separated these powers to protect our democracy from declining into tyranny. POTUS dodging that separation violates our Constitution.

We remain in denial, America. The fruit of a rotted root system is likely to be rotted also. American justice is now rotted to its very roots.
2) In a moment, I'll present two timely stories on topic. I will not follow the details out. Rather, I will encourage you to do so. I encourage you to read both stories carefully, with a detail oriented attention. Each story is horrifically meaningful right now.
3) Before I present the two stories, I will speak at a very high level about analysis, itself, and what it might mean to us if we embraced it. We? America. Common Sense America. If we wish to serve America we must all become adequate analysts. You must become an analyst.

Today was a disaster for Trump as the Supreme Ct. gave him a huge loss on his tax returns & financial records. Setting the stage for us to find out why #AllRoadsLeadToPutin with him.

Speaker Pelosi's reaction, below! But first, a word for our "ill-informed" Sec. of Education.🔥
SCOTUS handed Trump one of his worst days ever – rejecting his ridiculous stance that he's basically a king.

Both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh joined the 7-2 decision preserving our #ChecksAndBalances and affirming what Madam Speaker has always said: #NoOneIsAboveTheLaw.
The Supreme Court gave Congress (and NY prosecutors) a path to get Trump's records. Madam Speaker made it crystal clear that the House intends to pursue that path.

Unlike Senate GOP, House Dems take their oversight responsibility seriously. #NoOneIsAboveTheLaw

BEFORE READING THIS THREAD, do you think this statement is TRUE or FALSE?

Despite being a documented #epidemic for decades, @HHSGov's #CenterForDiseaseControl(@CDCgov) intentionally obstructs its collecting #statistics on what causes at least 10% of deaths NEEDLESSLY every year.

We’re excited to see 2020 candidates’ forthcoming responses to @charlie_savage’s questions about how they plan to use executive powers. We need to know how the next president will abide by our #checksandbalances if elected. charliesavage.com/?p=1967
There has and will be a big temptation for candidates to execute their bold policy plans with the same extensions of executive power Trump has abused. That’s why candidates now need to lay out what limits on their own executive power they’ll adhere to. 2/
Because Trump will not be the last president who aspires to unchecked power. By answering
@charlie_savage’s questions now, candidates can commit to voters that they will use their executive power to leave our democracy more secure and more inclusive than it has ever been. 3/

Today, Protect Democracy & co-counsel responded to the Trump admin’s opposition to our request for an injunction to permanently block @POTUS’s national emergency declaration to build a #BorderWall. protectdemocracy.org/resource-libra… @NiskanenCenter @tribelaw
The Trump admin argues that the President can override Congress’s constitutional power of the purse, redirecting funds for border wall construction that were not appropriated by Congress. That’s not true. President Trump’s actions violate our system of #ChecksAndBalances.
The Trump admin also argues that the President’s national emergency declaration can’t be challenged in court. This is absurd. The President is #NotAKing. When his actions violate the Constitution, he can and should be held accountable.

The #UCRegents suing #UCLAHealth’s radiologist & #UCLA professor Robert Lufkin MD (CA lic#G43135) is like the clichés about irony:

The state of California’s #UCRegents suing Robert Lufkin MD is suspicious to me, as I have reason to think Lufkin is a suspected #MandatedReporter #Accomplice of the #UCRegents & #UCLAHealth’s #CriminallyFraudulentPrivateMarketDiscipline that depends on #RegulatoryCapture.

@EricHolder has asked an important question:

#When was #America #ever #great?

I realize that there is a nearly unavoidable tendency to snort and spew one's coffee when they hear or read his question for the first time. But, honestly, isn't it worth the exercise to answer it?
So, @EricHolder, I'm going to do just that, and I'm going to ask my ragtag bag of followers and detractors to contribute as well.

I'm going to offer my evidence of moments of American greatness. And I'm going to ask those that read this thread to do the same.
But wait!

There's more!

I'm going to ask my detractors and antagonists (are you seeing this @fedupaton) to contribute as well, and will welcome from them both moments of greatness and moments of shame.

Trump’s declaration of a national emergency is contrived & without factual basis. He even admitted he "didn't need to do it." It's an autocratic move--unconstitutional. Trump cannot make appropriation decisions; that's Congress' constitutional power. 1/3

#FakeNationalEmergency
There's already strong bipartisan pushback against Trump. Congress will use the statutory process to terminate the declaration. Lawsuits have been or are about to be filed--@Public_Citizen, @CREWcrew, @AGBecerra, @protctdemocracy, @ACLU. 2/3

#RuleOfLaw

thehill.com/homenews/house…
Even if Trump can show that the declaration is constitutional, legally, he must show that using the funds is for the "national defense." There’s little chance he can convince the courts of this.

This wall will never happen. 3/3

Top Myths About #Asylum and why you should care:

Myth: Asylum seekers should file at US consulates in their home countries.

Reality: Asylum can only be sought at the border or inside the US. US consulates do not accept asylum applications.
Myth: Asylum seekers must present themselves at a port of entry.

Reality: The law (8 USC 1158) specifically says a person may apply for asylum whether they enter legally or not.

They can be technically prosecuted for unlawful entry, but that doesn't prevent asylum.
Myth: Asylum is only for political persecution, not for fear of gangs and terrorists.

Reality: There is NO requirement in the law that an asylum seeker's fear be politically based.

I've won many gang and terrorist related cases.

Can someone explain to me when the @GOP stopped ignoring fiscal responsibility?
Can someone explain to me why @GOP claimed to be the party of Moral Values but continues to support a person like @realDonaldTrump?

Can you explain to me why you wouldn't want another party in power for the Senate or House when you believe in the Constitution and checks and balances?

#WhyWeResist (THREAD) Renowned spiritual leader John Neuhas once said:
"Genuine #tolerance does not mean ignoring differences as if differences made no difference. Genuine tolerance means engaging differences w/in a bond of #civility & #respect." #CampaignforCivility 1/
Neuhas was not completely right. #Fascists, #WhiteSupremacists, Nazis, bigots, etc. lambast progressives for not tolerating their views. But hateful extremists use #tolerance merely as a tool to gain acceptance & obtain power. #CampaignforCivility #WhyWeResist 2/
Once fascists & bigots are in power, they vilify all who are different, all who dare to disagree. They only care about one thing: consolidating their power. #CampaignforCivility #WhyWeResist 3/
