Thread: This is how you cover #mentalhealth in the media. Yesterday's tribute to #CheslieKryst by @CBSMornings's @TonyDokoupil and his co-hosts/friends of Kryst @GayleKing and @NateBurleson was so heartbreaking, honest, and vulnerable.
On today's @CBSMornings, @NateBurleson, @GayleKing, & @TonyDokoupil had an amazing conversation w/@DoctorSueVarma on #mentalhealth. Varma: "Keep in close, frequent contact w/people...w/social media, we feel as if we know...what we're missing is missing is...deep, vulnerable" Q's
Asked by @GayleKing "why would we ask those questions...when there are no apparent signs" someone's struggling, @DoctorSueVarma notes it's b/c "when we see people who look so put together, we wonder what it takes to hold it together. All of us see the iceberg effect...only...10%"

I've been trying to grapple my mind around the beauty & tragedy of #ChelsieKryst, and what keeps coming to mind is the deep importance of having people and spaces in our lives where we allow ourselves to be fully seen & supported, especially in positions of high expectations.
We don't have to tell the world everything we're going through, but we are all worthy of having a trusted few people or spaces of support where we can surrender expectations and fully show up as ourselves in honesty about our struggles- whether that's therapy or with loved ones.
#CheslieKryst's story is jarring for many because it reminds us that there can be a stark contrast between the cultural image of accomplishment and a person's true inner life. It reminds us that depression can look like success and that the image of success isn't everything.

Yes we are strong.

But it is IMPOSSIBLE to be strong ALL THE TIME.

Ignoring or downplaying sadness, anxiety, despair, and hopelessness does not help you.

Telling someone else to ignore, pretend, or downplay sadness, anxiety, despair, and hopelessness does not help them.
