Thread for ‘but is this happening in schools’ #Edutwitter. Yes it is. Firstly personal testimony: “the school nurse had referred her to the school counsellor [who] informed [her] that a hatred of one’s breasts could be an indicator of a non-binary” safeschoolsallianceuk.net/our-stories/ou…
More testimony: “I am utterly horrified at what was taught at a PSHE lesson at my school recently. It was to a group of children, most are 11-12 years old. It is so, so much worse than I thought.” #Edutwitter #DiverseEd #LGBT

More personal testimony: “We did request to see their transgender policy and it was kafkaesque – it repeatedly conflated sex & gender… & downplayed the effects of binders, blockers and hormones” #Edutwitter #WomeEd #PSHEPeeps

🚨#IRR50 year wrap up🎁

And what a year it's been! We've produced articles on policing in schools, highlighted the treatment of asylum seekers, released reports on citizenship-stripping and police racism, PLUS all our #IRR50 activities

Here's a rundown of our major highlights🧵
In 2022, we celebrated 50 years since the IRR underwent its radical transformation: from an establishment body funded by large multinational corporations into an explicitly anti-racist thinktank oriented towards those making struggle against state racism. irr.org.uk/article/irr50/
We are living in difficult times. At the start of the year, we published a 5-part series by IRR Vice-Chair @FrancesWebber5 that mapped out the multiple threats and attacks on human rights.

🧵Thread on #ChildQ.

If #ChildQ (and other strip searches of #children) are tantamount to #ChildRape, what does this say about society which chooses this path, versus a path of treating drugs the same way as alcohol or cigarettes?

We should choose to treat all 3 the same way.

5,279 Children were Strip Searched by the Met Police in London in the past three years (that's five every single day.)

THREE QUARTERS of them were from ethnically diverse backgrounds

Just under half were black

Only 22% were white 🧵

The Met's already under pressure over its use of the tactic, after a damning report found racism was a factor in a 15-year-old girl, "Child Q", being strip searched while on her period at her school in Hackney, without an appropriate adult in the room.
Shadow Policing Minister @LabourSJ says strip search on children should only be used in 'exceptional' circumstances when lives are at risk.

As for the racial disparities, she calls that "wrong, on a basic human rights equality front."

I've tuned into the webinar from @MerchedCymru, @LGBAllies_Cymru and @WomensRightsNet on #RSE #RSEWales

Scene being set... Huge challenges with sexual harassment in schools as per @EstynHMI report and @WelshGovernment's RSE code fails to tackle these.
Stephanie Davies Arai @cwknews speaking first.
Children being exposed to porn and gender identity ideology online and in life.
Link being made between toxic messages girls receiving and deciding to opt-out of becoming women.
Change of language has happened. GIRES presenting gender identity as innate.
Now looking at resources for teens eg. Gender Identity Workbook for Teens, 'Gender Quest' Workbook, all encouraging kids to interpret their lives through gender lens (likes, hobbies etc).
Good grief.

A black 15 year old girl was strip searched at her school by the @metpoliceuk whilst she was on her period and this was sanctioned by her school. No public outrage. A cat gets kicked by a black man, there’s global outrage along with calls for him to be sacked and prosecuted
Zouma is now being prosecuted by the RSPCA for his actions. Swift actions in record time for feline justice. #ChildQ was strip searched TWO years ago at her school and there has been no justice. In fact the Met and the school have tried to keep it quiet as per usual.
To some white people, Black lives do not matter, Black children do not matter, Black trauma doesn’t matter and many white people have been socialised to believe that we are inferior and sub-human. This is why we don’t matter in their eyes and never will.

There was more global outrage about a cat being kicked & abused by a Black man, than a 15 year old Black girl being strip searched by the @metpoliceuk with the support of her school whilst she was menstruating. To many white people in this country, Black lives will never matter.
Black children and Black trauma do not matter, Black dehumanisation doesn’t matter, Black people aren’t seen as human because many white people have been socialised to see us as inferior. Hence why our pain, tears, outrage, and routine injustices don’t mean a thing to the world.
We had @adidasfootball @Vitality_UK publicly distancing themselves from Zouma and West Ham by ending their sponsorship because of his actions and now he’s being prosecuted by the @RSPCA_official in record time. The Met have tried to keep this quiet as usual!

Our statement on the appalling case of #ChildQ. We extend our full sympathy and solidarity to Child Q and her family at what must be a traumatising, exhausting and distressing time.
We especially thank Child Q for her courage in coming forward with her story, which must have been unimaginably difficult. We condemn in the strongest possible terms not just the individual actions of police officers involved, but the institutional frameworks built to hide them..
…the teachers who stood by in silence, and the carceral logic that facilitates a culture of violence, of surveillance, and of shattering dehumanization.

In the last 24 hours, 3 horrendous cases of institutional racism have come to light 🧵
A young Black schoolgirl, #ChildQ, was taken out of an exam to be strip searched - without any adult supervision from her guardians - on suspicion of possessing cannabis, which she did not.

She was then sent back into her exam, traumatised and shaken. theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/m…
A report from prestigious @RoySocChem today shows that racism is 'pervasive' in chemical sciences.

Robert Mokaya, the ONLY Black professor in 575 chemistry professors across the UK, has been rejected for research funding for 15 years. bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…
