Will do a thread on verifying information in a crisis tomorrow because this is resonating way too much. To prepare for it, remember two things: Provenance and provenance (is this the original version, and how do you know?). Image
If you can remember three things, then: Source--Who created the original piece of content? How do you know? Are they reliable? An effective manipulation tactic is creating the video your target wants to see. If you want to believe what the video shows you will be easier to fool.
Maybe it's a mil-blogger, and the video makes Russia look guilty. Share it, right? You just shared a deliberate fake created to make pro-Ukraine supporters look like they aren't trustworthy. "War on Fakes" releases the proof the video is fake, perhaps metadata left behind.

There has indeed been a failed coup attempt in China

I work at the Propaganda Department of the Ministry of State Security

Forgive me for hiding my identity, it's too politically sensitive

A few months ago my friend who works at the Logistic Support Department of the CMC, have started noticing odd requests from the Northern Theatre Command

They were requesting for type O- blood, this request should only be placed before a major military operation
So he jumped on our internal Wechat group and he started casually asking me if I've heard anything

We used voice chat, and put on our thickest local dialect to get around discipline officers monitoring the group

Today in Beijing, I investigated the #chinacoup so you donā€™t have to. At considerable personal risk, I ventured out to some neuralgic key points in the city. Disturbing finds. Brace yourselves. /1
This is Xinhua Gate, the main entrance to the Zhongnanhai compound, where the entire central leadership resides and works, including Xi Jinping.

Elite paratroopers have wrested control over the gate, cunningly disguised as the five middle-aged dudes who always stand there. /2
Nearby Tianā€™anmen Square swarms with thugs in plainclothes. Iā€™ve been in China long enough to know these are not tourists. /3

@jenniferatntd 's lies regarding the coup in China have resulted Falun Gong to trend

Notice how her Twitter handle has NTD at the end? It stands for "New Tang Dynasty" a tv channel run by Falungong cultists, they are the biggest source of fake news regarding China

This is how many falls into the anti-China trap, first they believe an outlandish fake news about China, and cause them to form an opinion on China

From there any anti-China fake news becomes an more believable because it becomes part of your confirmation bias thought process
Vast majority of people who have a strong opinion against China, have never been to China

Yet they are so sure of themselves, that they know China better than Chinese in China

Simply because they saw a few fake or out of context tweets from the parade of anti-China clowns

I wake up to DMs, and find a twitter feed full of unverified rumors about Xi Jinping under arrest in a palace coup.

It appears to be a complete falsehood at this point, but the spread of the rumor indicates belief in its plausibility.
The claimed source of the information is an ā€œinvestigative journalistā€ named Zhao Lanjian who tweeted that 60% of Chinaā€™s flights have been cancelled, which is an indication of a coup.

@ELuttwak might agree that flight cancellations are not the opening phase of a coup.
I donā€™t follow ā€œZhao Lanjianā€ on Twitter, and when I looked for his account, I could not find it.

Falungong media is amplifying the rumor which makes it suspect too.

Zhao has written several articles for New Tang Dynasty TV, which is a Falungong outlet.
