1/🧵 I think Chris Rock wouldn't have made a joke about Jada's illness if more folks were educated about the high prevalence of autoimmune & other chronic disorders.

#chronicillness #Spoonies #autoimmune #Alopecia #women #health #ChronicPain #chronic #illness #SickNotWeak
2/ As a woman who lives with multiple immune-related disorders, when a comedian makes a joke about chronic illness, I feel unseen...not just for me, but for all my fellow #chronicfolks. Does Chris Rock have any idea what Jada goes through to live with alopecia? Probably not.
3/ As a country, we need to create more dialogue around chronic illness, and especially autoimmune diseases. They are so prevalent yet they are usually talked about in whispers....'Oh, she has Crohn's.' Cancer used to be spoken about in hushed words, too.

I know that there are #patient advocates that take issue with @BethDarnall work but I find it critical. I know many individuals in my community that have wanted to decrease their opioids or get off all together for various reasons. Listening to their stories are frightening. 1/
What I don’t condone, is #physicians & #antiopioid proponents utilizing work done such as @BethDarnall or other psychologist that work in the area of #pain to be dismissive of those with #acute or #chronicpain. Sadly, this occurs all too often and has caused a distrust by 2/
those with #acute or #chronic pain. I believe that we need a wide variety of options. I believe that care should be individualized. That this is often not occurring is NOT the fault of those working to provide options. Those in the field that dismiss patients by saying #pain 3/

Während der Pandemie haben wir uns an die Vorstellung gewöhnt, dass die meisten #COVID-Fälle „#milde #Verläufe sind.

Q-Do kidney diseases affect women differently?

Women have
⬆️Autoimmune diseases (SLE, RA, Systemic Scleroderma)
In #Women of Color that's 2- 3X commoner, early-onset with⬆️ complications

⬆️UTI due to short urethra
In #Pregnancy ⬆️risk of pyelonephritis and sepsis

#Mars would be around 25* in the 6th #Bhaav, looking into the #Lagan with 8th #Drishti where #Laganesh #Venus would also be placed with similar #Degrees. #Mars/#Venus are not just antiparties, they are also #Enemies to one another and hence this #Vedan is not the best
#Rahu, placed in the 8th #Bhaav of the #Chart would also be having similar 25*. In #Taurus, dispositor of #Rahu is #Venus. #Rahu and #Venus having similar strength, #Rahu becomes very powerful and #Malefic for the time being

#DeepikaPadukone: #No_Hasty_Actions_Please

While the whole Hindu Right Wing is baying for Deepika Padukone's blood, I have a different take. I cannot shun this responsibility to post my thoughts about Deepika. I advocate no #Hash_Tea actions against her. Let me elaborate.

We should never forget Deepika is a woman of #substance. She is made of sterner #stuff. She's managed to create her own identity away from her father's shadow and done her best to #weed out nepotism in cinema field.

Still struggling with the wording of this invitation. ‘#COVID-19 has exacerbated the raging #opioid crisis driven by the nation’s more than 50 million #pain suffers......’. I have contacted both @RepJudyChu & @RepWalorski office to express my concern & to 1/ Image
attempt to understand why the blame for the #opioidepidemic seemed to be placed at the feet of those that have #chronicpain. In the past years the # of #opioid pain medication prescriptions have plummeted yet rates of overdose climbed. Many individuals with #chronicpain 2/

Detroit. The history of my city is racially-charged and rooted in the effects of structural and individualized racism. #COVID19 exposed that. As a #SickleCell physician who cares for black patients with #chronicpain and #chronic disease, I have known that for a long time 1/n
#Detroit has the largest black community in the country (84.3%). In 1910 it was 98.7% white, but by 1930, due to the Great Migration the black community grew. The increase in diversity was perceived as a threat to the way of life and the isolation of black people began. 2/n
A terrible example of this comes from 1925, an African American physician #OssianSweet, found his home on surrounded by an angry mob; a neighborhood where he was the most affluent, the resentment from his neighbors that a black man had infiltrated, caused hate and violence. 3/n

So much energy has gone into research looking to define optimal strategies for opioid tapering where is the energy being given to development of other medications that are as effective as opioids with less risk? I know this paper referenced that many #patients tapered 2/
experienced pain relief & increased functioning yet as an advocate I receive regular calls from inds where pain care has been reduced or cut off entirely w disasterous results. My kids benefit from #opioid #pain meds. I am nor are they opposed to the utilization of other meds 3/

.@BridgeMichigan You gave positive press to BC/BS Michigan's decision to pay doctors 35% more if they don't prescribe #opioids post-op. This thread is a #factcheck.

1) You never mentioned that restricting rx access has failed to curb ODs, which are fueled by illegal drug use.
Jnl of AMA study: Efforts to curb ODs focused on "restricting the supply of prescription #opioids...have failed to demonstrate consistent benefit." Continuing these policies "may have a modest effect, at best."

This is widely known. Your writer didn't know it.
2) A 2017 study looked specifically at rx post-op & found 99.4+% safe use. The 0.6% included people who refilled their rx. You just gave great press to @BCBSM who's paying doctors to leave patients in pain to avoid meds w/ +99.4% safe use. (Citations in report below.)

1) Experiencing better physical function with the addition of prescription pain medication is NOT a moral failing. For the intractable pain person, this can be life altering in the best way.
Now, it has become stigmatized and corrupted into polarizing political and societal -
Judgment, gaslighting and scapegoating. Plus, new positions of power, for those willing to forgo human morality for the sake of instant professional accolades.
Being anti opioid will soon go out of style. And trust me- not forgotten who conducted that train.
The ones who stood by and let it happen, or did nothing. The ones who were warned but continued to be complicit. All will be part of this historic human tragedy. @Oregon should be acting, should be fixing.

Here, in 24 sick patients admitted to ICU for longer periods, #microbiome diversity tended to decrease dramatically 👉 and subjects’ gut microbiomes often became dominated by pathogenic #bacteria that cld be passed from patient to patient: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/31526… ImageImage
2/2 A key takeaway from the study is that, under conditions of imbalance/immunosuppression, #organisms already present in a patient can evolve to become a serious pathogenic threat (eg there is not necessarily a need for a “new” external #infection)
3/3 Similarly, this Stanford team studied the source of bloodstream #infections in #hospitalized + immunocompromised patients 👉 In many cases, the same strain of a particular bloodstream #pathogen was also identified in a patients’ gut microbiome: nature.com/articles/s4159… ImageImage

Tuesday is my father's 2nd yahrzeit
Sunday 4/21 was the 2y anniversary of his death.

In reflecting back, I have some thoughts for #medtwitter, #Jews and the general public...

1. Condolence notes just need to say, "I am thinking of you" or "I was sorry to hear your news" or "I am sorry for your loss."

Don't overthink it, and don't offer false platitudes. Send your note or make your call, and the person who is #mourning knows you care.
2/
2. Show up.
For #shiva, for #kaddish. The first week, there's a lot of people around in a #Jewish house of mourning. Then everyone goes home, and we are left alone.
Offer to go to lunch. Bring dinner. Take a walk.
Join us in shul. Kaddish that first time in services was hard.

Yes 👉 And when #bacteria enter the #blood, they are even more likely to infect + persist inside the cells of the immune system 👉 There, the proteins + #metabolites they create can directly modulate the activity of human genes that regulate #metabolism + immune response etc
Also a growing # of organisms can persist in the #blood itself 👉 This @StanfordMed study found 1000s of never before discovered bacteria + #viruses in the blood of immunocompromised patients (99% of microbes identified were previously unknown to science): pnas.org/content/early/…
The team contends these newly discovered microbes 👉 “have potential consequences for human #health. They may prove to be the cause of acute or #chronic diseases that, to date, have unknown etiology”☝️This technology has not yet been used to study blood in conditions like #ME/CFS
