I remember the one my ex attended during our separation. Another man there called to ask if I would meet the returning men at the church “to motivate” his resolve to be a “more godly husband & father” & “encourage the continued change he experienced” while on the retreat.

It was the first time I felt free to tell the truth.
I told him I had been trying to encourage my then husband for over a decade. I did everything to motivate him be a more godly husband & father, encourage him to get help, support him financially, emotionally, and spiritually.

I had tried everything, read every Christian marriage book I could find, asked 4 help and advice from pastors and spiritual mentors 4yrs, attempted xtian counseling and yes, went on men’s/women’s/& marriage retreats with him too. But I recognize I could never motivate him.

If, when I tell you my story of abuse, you respond with “there are two sides to every story”, that immediately infers that my side of the story is untrue, unacceptable, and inaccurate. If you believe me, you will say something like “I am so sorry that happened to you”. 1/5
If you cannot say those words because you are so deeply enmeshed with an abusive community or culture, I get it. The Kool-Aid is potent, sweet, and satisfying. As a matter of fact, I had my own damn tumbler. I understand the undying loyalty you feel, 2/5
the veil of protection you wear, and the silence you commit to. I did all those things myself. I thought I was “protecting the bride” when all I was doing was perpetuating a lie. So when you tell me there are two sides to every story, I know what you’re doing & I forgive you. 3/5

they were being pulled into something that happened so long ago.
This church just happens to be within walking distance of my house, and they just happened to hire the youth pastor from my former church who ignored my abuse and let my abuser continue to work with students.
