Bonjour la #philosophie ! 🤡

The conversation is about this piece by the way. It discusses the draft paper that was part of Timnit Gebru’s exit from Google.

Nicely put.

So many of Claire Lehmann's statements reveal a profound lack of curiosity. #Quillette
Out of professional obligation, I have started reading James Lindsay's latest entry on his blog, and please let me release some steam by saying the first paragraph is a #writingstudies teacher's nightmare.

OK, thanks for listening.

I'll be my usual tough self and continue now.
Yes, I am continuing to read.

Allow me to paste this: "I contend that this phenomenon represents a potentially existential risk to advanced modern civilizations, and, by the same actors insisting that two and two don’t necessarily make four, am being mocked for saying so."

hi #poliscitwitter can any political theorists help me understand why Harvey Mansfield's "Manliness" is an academic text rather than, as it appears, a combination of some deeply homoerotic fan fiction and the kind of manifesto you usually find along with several bodies? Image
a few excerpts, for the uninitiated... 🧵
“Besides being weaker than men’s, women’s bodies are made to attract and to please men.” #scholarship #theory Image

Today at SFI:

External Professor @DaniSBassett (@Penn) on addressing #inequity in the scientific community caused by #bias in #citation practices—focusing on the evidence of a growing #gender imbalance in the reference lists of #neuroscience research.

santafe.edu/events/citing-…
The proportion of #neuroscience papers with woman first or last authors grew from 1995 to 2018, but the undercitation of female authors actually *increased* in that time.

SFI's @DaniSBassett (@Penn) on #gender #inequity in the scientific community:
Undercitation of #neuroscience research with first or last woman authors appears to be driven predominantly by the reference lists of papers written by male-male teams.

This is not to say, however, that all men undercite women, or that women do not also undercite women:

***On the conditions of authority in academic publics***

This thread 👇🏼 summarizes recent article by Ingrid Piller in Journal of #Sociolinguistics for the busy reader

#research #AcademicTwitter Image
Q: What makes a #text credible, trustworthy and authoritative?

Many people think it's the quality of #discourse: that some ways of using #language make text more believable

Certainly true BUT: world leaders may talk complete nonsense and still command authority and get elected ImageImage
That is because "#authority comes to #language from outside” (Bourdieu, 1991, p. 109) Image

Here's the thing. If you--a computer scientist who has published exclusively on #compsci education--want to make some claims about how "the science of sex differences" is discussed on university and college campuses, you actually have to consider relevant #research. 1/ #citation
Let's have a look at who you're citing and upon what recognized peer-reviewed scholarship your discussion relies.
1. James Damore
2. Your own previous Quillette article "Why Women Don't Code"
3. Steven Pinker's *The Blank Slate*
4. A Gad Saad's talk
5. A Heterodox Academy blog 2/
6. A Steven Pinker interview
7. A Claire Lehmann Quillette article
8. A research article (Aha! Finally!) whose only claim to fame is . . . wait for it . . . wait for it . . . NOT MAKING IT THROUGH PEER REVIEW
9. That Larry Summers speech

That's it. 3/
