We're still at sea waiting for a port of safety for the 440 people onboard our #SeaWatch3, but the year is coming to an end and it's time to draw some conclusions: Image
The humanitarian catastrophe in the #Mediterranean continues and compared to last year, the death toll has increased. While the #EU nearly stopped state-run sea rescues, together with the #CivilFleet we tried to close the deadly rescue gap at least a bit in 2021. Image
Hardly noticed by the public, for many people in search of safety, and in the absence of safe and legal escape routes, only the life-threatening crossing from #Libya over the central Mediterranean remains. Image

Alarm Phone Central Mediterranean Regional Analysis, 1 January - 30 June 2020.

#CivilFleet #FreedomOfMovement #FerriesNotFrontex #BridgesNotWalls

alarmphone.org/en/2020/07/06/…
Over the past 6 months, January to June 2020, the Central #Mediterranean has continued to be a zone of violence, human rights abuses, disappearance and death, as well as a stage of struggles for #freedomofmovement, both by people fleeing #Libya & #Tunisia and by the #CivilFleet.
In 2020, so far, the #AlarmPhone has supported 77 boats in distress in the Central #Med, carrying ~4,500 people. This does not include dozens of boats that called us but where we were unable to establish sufficient contact to retrieve crucial information, such as GPS positions.

SOS! This morning, ~47 people in distress called us from a boat in the European SAR zone. They fled from #Libya and say that they have been at sea already for several days. They say they are drifting. Relevant authorities are informed. Rescue is needed immediately!
Once more, authorities in #Malta & #Italy reject their responsibility to Search & Rescue. RCC Malta does not even pick up the phone, as usual. The ~47 people in distress have been at sea 3 days without food or water. This is happening right now just ~40nm south of #Lampedusa.
There is still no reaction from competent authorities. We are in regular contact with the ~47 people in distress, who said that 7 people on board collapsed. The engine is not working and the boat cannot move further. Denying rescue means letting them drown. #BlackLivesMatter

TWELVE DEATHS and a SECRET PUSH-BACK TO LIBYA - How Malta and EU authorities left people to die at sea and returned survivors to war. @RescueMed @seawatch_intl

alarmphone.org/en/2020/04/16/…
The boat drifted within in the #Malta SAR zone, south of #Lampedusa, for days. European authorities failed to intervene & used #COVID19 as an excuse to breach the law of the sea, human rights & refugee conventions. @Armed_Forces_MT & the EU are responsible for these deaths.
#AlarmPhone, @seawatch_intl & @RescueMed mobilised all their forces to prevent these deaths, but in vain. This case, as well as several other distress cases that the Alarm Phone reported on, highlights once more the devastating effects of #EU border policies on migrant lives.

+++ 50 lives in great danger +++ This morning we were alerted by about 50 people on a white rubber boat in distress off the coast of #Libya. We informed authorities & asked for rescue but they are not reacting. The people on board are in panic & need to be rescued immediately!
++ 56 People safely on the Open Arms! ++
The people who alerted us this morning when in distress off #Libya were rescued by the #OpenArms who returned to the Central #Med just in time. We are relieved they did not have to survive another night at sea!

This afternoon we were alerted by 41 people on a boat in distress in Maltese #SAR. They are fleeing from #Libya, among them many children. We informed authorities of #Malta and demand immediate rescue! Weather conditions are dangerous and night is coming. Don't let them drown! Image
The people on board are desperately asking for help. Water is entering the boat, and they have been adrift for hours. "The sea is so big, and our boat is too small, we are afraid to die", they said. They cannot spend the night at sea. #Malta must rescue them immediately!
The people are safely on board #SeaWatch3! After many hours at severe risk of drowning, we are relieved that the 42 people on board were found and rescued. #Malta did not act within its own Search and Rescue zone - again the #civilfleet had to intervene to rescue these lives.

Our Central #Mediterranean Regional Analysis is out!

It covers the period 1 Oct to 31 Dec 2019 & discusses key developments in this region of the #Med.

In 2019, we were alerted to 101 boats escaping #Libya or #Tunisia, carrying over 6,200 people.

alarmphone.org/en/2020/01/05/…
Our analysis of the central #Med highlights some of the following:

🔸#CivilFleet & #AlarmPhone rescues
🔸Non-assistance & interceptions by #Europe & allies
🔸“Privatised” push-backs to #Libya
🔸Recent shipwrecks & the invisibilised deaths at sea
🔸Messages from Libyan #detention
Despite all atrocities we witnessed in the central #Med, people did not stop struggling for #FreedomOfMovement & #safepassage. Many boats reached #Europe autonomously, NGO vessels returned to sea & rescued hundreds of people & migrants resisted their illegal push-back to #Libya.
