🌍🔥…upper 2000m warming began, unequivocally, at least in the 1950s [& is] accelerating-more than doubling (from <5 to 10 ZJ/yr) from the 1960s-2010s. MORE
phys.org/news/2022-10-c…
2/👉A ZJ is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Joules of energy)

For comparison-the annual energy consumption for the U.S. is approximately 0.1 ZJ 👀‼️

And w/associated expansion of the oceans & melting of land-based ice, sea levels are rising relentlessly. MORE
3/A warmer ocean brings tremendous consequences-just sea life, weather patterns across the planet & the food chain—more intense storms, deadly rainfall, flooding, more powerful typhoons & hurricanes-parts of the planet will become drier, w/more heat waves & droughts. MORE

~THREAD~ The @oversightdems hearing on #BigOilLies fueling the #ClimateCrisis brought in leading climate scientists and researchers in to discuss the ways #BigOil spread disinformation that delay climate action & what that delay costs us. Here is a 🧵 of some of the big moments:
2/ Big Takeaway - We have zero time left to wait yet a small handful of the largest #oilandgas companies are undertaking a new effort to keep fossil fuels burning: Climate Commitments
3/ Climate commitments can be a good thing if commitments are based on science & goals are inline with the #ParisAgreement. And of course commitments only work if companies meet them. Thus far @chevron @exxonmobil @shell @bpplc & others haven't met any of these requirements

I've reviewed the resources @CodePink recommends as part of its #ChinaIsNotOurEnemy campaign regarding #Xinjiang #Uyghurs. codepink.org/china_faq
These resources promote a cultural response to alleged threat of #terrorism from #EastTurkistan/#Xinjiang, and I'm not sure if @CodePink would also approve of governments like #UK #USA #Belgium #France similarly "reeducating" their Muslim minority populations.
Aside from the condescension in the Chinese government documents cited, there is all but a total embrace of pre-crime activities à la Philip K. Dick's "The Minority Report." independent.co.uk/arts-entertain…

15 days of mandatory national lockdown will do much more for enviroment than 'cracker ban' and 'odd even' idioticsm.

Pitra paksh may be - 15 days of simple and sober life will also help accuring the mandatory spiritual practice of Pitra-tarpan.
Keep 15 days as mandatory and planned national lockdown every 6 months.

Ecomonic loss is Ok!

Economy and comfort can be, should be and must be compromised over enviroment.

Clock is ticking fast.

@India4Climate
@COP26
Another suggestion -
Celebrate minimum 30 days every year where only emergency services and public transports are allowed, to cut down on vehicular pollution.

Make 'WFH' compulsory where ever it can be practiced.

One year old but still very true words from @EricHolthaus:

>> Times like these feel too big, too complex to grasp. But we know from history that times like these are exactly when radical change is most likely to happen.

That’s where you come in.
Climate scientists have been saying for years that only "rapid, far-reaching & unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" will begin to repair the harms already underway in the #ClimateEmergency.

That means: political, cultural, economic, & technological revolution.
For revolutions to succeed, they have to keep moving once they’ve started. This is what it looks like to create systemic change from your own individual action: Join the crowd demanding justice. Do everything you can to rest, recharge, lend aid, care for loved ones & strangers.

#BigBrotherBritain

George Orwell based his novel, 1984, on 1930s fascism & communism, projecting them onto a future Britain & unwittingly making it difficult for us to recognise how #BigBrother would manifest himself in liberal democracies like our own.
Manifest himself he does, but not as in 1984. Instead, we are left many freedoms, while at the same time being enslaved - rich & poor alike - to BigB & #TheMatrix of state & capital. As in the film, most are completely unaware of it, & the well-served have no reason to become so.
But enslaved we are, to a system that is inherently unjust, inhumane, & unsustainable on our finite, vulnerable & overpopulated planet, #SpaceshipEarth.

Thus enslaved, our leaders have been unable to initiate the #SustainabilityRevolution on which our very survival depends.

#HowICameToClimate: I grew up in an activist fam. Mom was an elected official+attorney fighting police violence. As a teen I was active in the peace movement+witnessed much eco-activism connected to that (mostly white). In my 20s I did black community organizing.
#ClimateTwitter
In the early '00s, I co-faciltated a bunch of activist spaces w/ Van Jones+Julia Butterfly that connected racial+economic justice w/ eco activism. Back then, I was primarily an artist+occasional facilitator. Most of my energy went into making art that has strong social commentary
At the time, I wasn't part of any particular political organizations, but I had strong relationships with activists in many movements+folks knew they could call on me for different stuff: performing, teaching, facilitating. Folks commissioned me to write poems for their movements

[Thread] Yesterday evening, the @Airbus Head of Public Affairs Germany threatened #ExtinctionRebellion to not get in his way. With 5 exclamation marks. 😲
Mr Reinhardt has more than 1000 followers on Twitter, so we felt a bit uneasy about this and wanted to know what exactly he was willing to do.
So we asked him if he just wanted to run us over with his company car or rather intended to use one of the weapon systems produced by @Airbus, like those #Eurofighter jets #Airbus is selling to #SaudiArabia. He said: "Whatever it takes."

„The UN goal is to stay to 6-9 meters sea level rise.” — Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate in Physics.

That would dislocate 10% of the world's population and drown countries like the Netherlands.

Selected the best moments for you from this interesting panel discussion.👇

[THREAD 1/8]
Steven Chu (@energybroseph), Nobel Price Laureate for Physics and Julian Dowdeswell discuss tipping points and the limitations of the IPCC reports as they didn’t include thresholds like the permafrost thawe.

How worried are you?
Steven Chu: "I am scared to death."

[THREAD 2/8]
"The entire emissions of the world have to go negative. We must not only stop producing CO2 and all the other greenhouse gases, we actually have to be sucking them from the atmosphere…in order to get to 2°C." — Steven Chu (@energybroseph), Nobel Price for Physics

We have under 11.5 years to limit #climateCatastrophe
warns #UN
theguardian.com/environment/20…
"“We can see there is a difference and it’s substantial,” Roberts said.

At 1.5C the proportion of the global population exposed to water stress could be 50% lower than at 2C, it notes. Food scarcity would be less of a problem and hundreds of millions fewer people, particularly..
... in poor countries, would be at risk of climate-related poverty.

At 2C extremely hot days, such as those experienced in the northern hemisphere this summer, would become more severe and common, increasing heat-related deaths and causing more forest fires."

Watch my interview on @SkyNews yesterday, talking about @ExtinctionR and #ClimateCatastrophe!

Just got home after 3 days protesting in London (PhD work awaits unfortunately). Spent most of that time with placard full of graphs explaining to public why I thought I must be there.
I carefully stood to side of the road so as not to be arrested, but over 300 protesters have been, and hundreds more waiting. Must say that from what I saw police were very agreeable and not overly forceful in removing protesters, let's hope it stays that way.
Although disruption to people's daily lives is not ideal, it's necessary to get this issue attention it deserves. One of the arrested was a Lawyer who negotiated 2015 Paris Climate Agreement (which has been largely ignored since) - shows this is the kind of action we now need.
