A story from my past (it’s related to climate work).

I once planned out a marathon for the specific purpose of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I had trained well and knew exactly how to pace myself to finish with a few minutes’ cushion under the qualifying standard. 1/n Marathon runners on a divid...
At about mile 18 I slowed through a water stop to pick up a couple of cups of water. I glanced at my watch and was horrified to see that I was way behind schedule. There was no possible way for me to finish under the qualifying standard. 2/n
I was so overcome by disappointment, I trudged the next few miles. I managed to not cry, but just barely. After a while, I looked at my watch again. WAIT!! I had misread my watch earlier!! I had been AHEAD of schedule by just a bit rather than being way behind! 3/n

It is a new tool box. A way to apply new thinking to the problems of contemporary life. What are we DOING when we change something in a system like #energy #transport #housing or #food?

We are changing a system which makes us free. Free to cook, clean, move and shelter.
So it is never just #energy #energytransition work we are doing. We are not just trying to hit #netzero we are intervening in peoples lives and #capabilities

These freedoms are part of a contract between individuls, society and institutions.

This is an interesting article that has been referenced as showing that individual action on climate is not effective. I read it differently and disagree to some extent with the conclusions of at least one expert quoted. Here’s why: 1/n

grist.org/climate/the-wo…
The fact that global emissions have only fallen by a minimal percentage during the COVID shutdown tells me at least two things. First, a lot of people in big economies might be living their lives as usual to the extent possible. Second, a very high percentage of GHG emissions 2/n
are generated for us indirectly. Yes, transportation is a big part of the problem. *Personal* transportation isn’t as big of a part of that as some think. We’re mostly still eating; for many of us, our food comes from far away. That requires transportation. I drove into a 3/n

Yesterday I lived through an "extreme weather event". Those words fail to convey the violence of what happened. A storm cell with apocalyptic hail hit Warrandyte and many other places. These events are in the news daily and are now starting to become commonplace.

1/

#auspol
Formerly the weather was a short segment that came at the end of the news. Now it is the news, and the deeds and decisions of humans gets scant attention. This is because of the changes we have made to the planet and to its systems; because of climate change.

2/

#BurningPlanet
Climate change threatens us in so many ways. It pollutes the air we breathe, reduces the amount of water we have to drink and threatens the supply of food that we eat. Climate change can destroy the buildings we live in and the machines that we use.

I no longer have patience with CLIMATE science deniers. They and the fossil fuel industry have delayed #ClimateAction for three decades. Now, my country, my second homeland, is on fire. All of it. Every single state. Precious wildlife vanquished. Human life lost. Homes destroyed.
2/ Forests devastated. Kangaroo Island is burning to the ground, along w/ some of the world’s oldest, most unique, irreplaceable species. Our fires are NOT normal. They are driven by global warming and #ClimateChange. World, please hear our cry: We are the canary in the coal mine
3/ Australia is a warning about the #ClimateCrisis gripping our planet. Deniers, step aside and let the rest of us do the work to reverse the damage humans have done to our environment. Lives are at risk. I, for one, am no longer standing by while you stifle efforts to reign

#NewYearChallenge I am on the last day on not-buying-anything-I-don't-need-year and thought I'd share in case it inspires you to do the same

Two weeks before Christmas last year I watched a #DavidAttenborough show, #BluePlanet and it inspired me to take massive action

#Thread
I watched the plastic floating in the oceans and wondered, with shame, how much was mine :/

I decided to do a year of not consuming.

My only rule was "not to buy anything I didn't need". This meant I could buy food, drink and basic toiletries etc.
(I included mascara and moisturiser on my basic lists, I'm not a monster).

I didn't buy; clothes, shoes, presents, other makeup, hair products, jewellery, bags, decorations, anything disposable, plants, flowers, house items etc.

Welcome to the Member of Congress Tracking Report for the week ending November 10, 2019. With Congress on recess this week, we are going to do things a bit differently this week. We are going to take a dive into #McConnellsGraveyard.

#GOP keeps trotting out their tired talking point about the “do-nothing-Dems” and all we can concentrate on is #Impeachment.

NOT TRUE.

What you’ll find below are 30 bills of the 300+ that #McConnell has stalled in the Senate.

7 months ago Scott Morrison rejected a report warning of these fires because it mentioned climate change as an aggravating factor. Then the Coalition cut $75m from fire prevention and RFS.

Climate change is not political. Saying the sky is blue is not political. Climate change denial IS political. Lying to further the interests of fossil fuel companies is political in the worst way. #ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #ClimateActionNow
@CDpay73 For what it's worth, I have since read varying figures saying the cuts varied from as low as "$20m per year" to "$40m" and "35% of the total budget". However, these figures were from NSW alone.

.@realDonaldTrump and Republicans in Washington want you to think Democrats can’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

But we’ve been fighting #ForThePeople since Day One.

The House-passed legislation piling up outside @SenateMajLdr McConnell’s office proves it.
@realDonaldTrump @senatemajldr The scores of bills we’ve passed aren’t busy work.

If passed into law, they will improve the lives of Americans across the country & build a better future for generations to come.

But the @SenateGOP has made the cynical decision to ignore it all.
Some key examples?

H.R. 7, the #PaycheckFairness Act, would ensure equal pay for women nationwide.

Meanwhile, the #ForThePeople Act would enact the most ambitious set of democracy reforms and ethics standards in a generation.

1/ Another ridiculous lie from @realDonaldTrump.

From day one, @HouseDemocrats have been focused on delivering on our promises to the American people. Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell calls himself the “grim reaper” and refuses to even consider our bills.
2/ We have the receipts to back it up.
We passed #HR1, the For The People Act — the most ambitious set of ethics & election reforms in a generation. It gets big money out of politics, protects voting rights & strengthens ethics laws.
3/ We passed the #EqualityAct to ensure #LGBTQ Americans get the same legal protection as everyone else.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't really care about the polar bears. I'm selfish. I'm fighting climate change bc it poses an existential threat to humanity, with the burdne falling heaviest on formerly colonized nations & poor communities of color. #ClimateStrike
Now it's not that I don't care about polar bears, it's that I care about people more, and that the survival of many humans r linked to the health of the environment and biodiversity. #ClimateStrike #ClimateAction
The climate fight isn't just about recycling and saving pandas. Millions of people are going to be displaced from natural disasters, rising sea levels, and thinning resources. Every political and social issue u care about will be worsened by climate change ange #ClimateStrike

Here are the ones that have been completed so far:
