Last week I asked @Dave_Eby to reiterate on the record his 100 day plan statement that we can’t expand or build new fossil fuel projects in BC.

Instead he said the @bcndp are “committed to meeting our climate targets”. Are they really? 1/ #bcpoli ecojustice.ca/pressrelease/l…
BC’s climate accountability reports exist because the @bcgreenscaucus demanded them during the minority gov’t to ensure no future gov't could greenwash reality.

And the reality in British Columbia is that we are not on track to meet either our 2025 or 2030 targets. 2/ #bcpoli
The @bcndp continue to use all the right words but their actions shout the exact opposite.

This government is in court right now because they broke their own laws requiring a reduction in emissions. 3/ #bcpoli #ClimateAction #ClimateDelay theprovince.com/opinion/kate-k…

It really does make you wonder. WA Dems are sending out an SOS on the SoS race.
As senate transportation chair Steve Hobbs was highway-obsessed and a huge impediment to getting a package that focused on transit, safe streets, and climate. Hobbs simply is not a climate leader. theurbanist.org/2021/04/12/fiv…
Hobbs has tried to spin his record since, but the fact remains that it was not one of climate action or of fix-it-first discipline. #ClimateCrisis #NoNewHighways theurbanist.org/2021/05/24/sen…

I'll be live tweeting the debate on this motion.

As a third party we haven't been given the opportunity to be on the speakers list for the motion. #bcpoli #ClimateCrisis #LNG #oilandgas
Debate on #LNG motion begins with BC Liberal MLA Mike Bernier suggesting that BC LNG can “help” with the transition away from coal.
LNG is not a transition fuel. The methane emissions from #fracking intensify the #ClimateEmergency
MLA Bernier states “we are losing billions in investment.”

No mention of billions in subsidies to prop up oil and gas industry.

Climate change is already costing billions.

Consider the costs of wildfires, droughts, floods.

It is increasingly clear that there's now a concerted effort under way in parts of the British press to derail action on the #ClimateEmergency.

This🧵highlights key examples & shows how the main arguments are textbook #ClimateDelay 1/n
Remember, this follows years of the same papers pedalling climate denial. Denial is no longer an option, we’ve entered a new phase of predatory delay as defined by @AlexSteffen... 2/n

In case you missed it, two important articles on fossil fuel finance were published this week 🚨

🧵
In the first, @niccolo_berlin, @jan_c_steckel and @Jakob_MCC dig into who is building, developing, financing and banking for new coal power plants. They differentiate between these four actors, showing the global scope of fossil fuel finance

Here you can see the central roles of China, Japan, the EU and the United States in the financial supply chain.

Note: these are commercial banks and institutional investors. This is about profit and return on investment, regardless of the climate and health consequences.

You know when someone accepts man-made climate change, but then explains why we should do nothing about it?

We call these "Discourses of #ClimateDelay" & there are 12 of them. We've written a paper about it doi.org/10.1017/sus.20…

THREAD with examples from the transport sector
The first group of discourses of climate delay aims to *redirect responsibility*. It accepts that *someone* should take action to mitigate climate change, but not us, not right now, not our business / sector / town.

Wee see plenty of that in the transport sector.
Discourse of #ClimateDelay #1: Individualism.

It's when they pretend that climate action is just a question of individuals making different choices. The goal is to avoid talking about anything that goes beyond that.

The city of #Leeds set up a #ClimateChange Citizen's Jury with the task of producing recommendations.

It recommended to stop the planned expansion of the local airport.

The city council's reponse is a masterclass in #ClimateDelay discourse [Thread] democracy.leeds.gov.uk/documents/b229…
What do we (we're preparing a paper on this) mean by 'discourses of climate delay'? This:
So Leeds council statement combines several types of climate delay discourse. Let's go through (and debunk) them one by one.

1) what we call "whataboutism". Leeds airport accounts for a trivial amount of air travel emissions, so why bother? Let the others do something about it.
